I found the answer – my  “C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu” directory was set as hidden.  As soon as I turned the “hidden” off in the properties everything popped up.

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2603415/how-to-recover-the-programs-disappeared-from-the-all-programs-of-the-s

This is the first time in years that I have found something useful on Microsoft’s support before I found it documented or solved elsewhere.

Open Shell Menu (previously Classic Shell)

      Stardock Start10.

PKCano – I am using Classic Menu and still not seeing what is in C:\Program Files (x86) or C:\Program Files.  Do I have to change something in “Basic Settings” or “Customize Start Menu”?  I currently just have it on default settings.

All Programs is not a standard part of the Windows 10 Start menu.

Any shortcuts in C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs or C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs appear in the alphabetical apps list:

Scroll down the app list to see all apps and programs alphabetically
See what’s on the Start menu

OK – so anything in the directories:

      C:\Program Files (x86) or C:\Program Files

will not appear in the Start Menu because they aren’t in C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs or C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Does anyone know of a handy program available that will look in all 4 places and show what you have installed on your entire PC?

Thanks Microfix – exactly the type of answer I was hoping for.  I’m not familiar with winapp2.ini but that won’t stop me from playing with it.  I wasn’t aware that I could “preview” winapp2.ini without installing in BleachBit.  I will start with that.  I’m curious exactly what it will remove.

      winapp

Microfix – So what exactly do all of these additional options  from winapp2.ini do?  I understand most of them but what do the applications do – it doesn’t provide anything other than blanket “application” with no detail as to what it cleans.

      Thanks

      Here’s the latest –

CCleaner (Avast) is pointing the figure at Norton and that I should install up-to-date software – so I uninstall/reinstalled and still had same issue.

I dealt with Norton (Broadcom) for 2 hours in chat trying to figure out issue with no luck.

I uninstalled the MS-DEFCON 4 Win10 updates I installed on 6/2/2020 – and still had no success (I reinstalled them since DEFCON was still at 4).

I’m more suspicious of CCleaner since they got bought out by Avast who are notorious for Windows Updates/AV issues.  They started pointing their fingerprint on CCleaner starting with 5.45, so it may be time to try BleachBit and figure out the winapp2 Github additions.

      Thanks

Thanks CAS – I tried to install v5.44 (the last version that AVAST didn’t touch) and Windows won’t let it install on my PC .. too many more recent versions.

ccPortable runs on my 1909 Pro with May 2020 updates.

      Replace CCleaner with ccPortable.

      Alex5723 –

Thanks for the suggestion – I tried ccPortable with no luck. CCleaner suggested similar (ccSlim and a few other suggestions) with no luck. It tries to install CCleaner but closes at about the 92% point. ccPortable installed but wouldn’t run – it seems to have issues with the new Health Check, which must be a new feature Avast tried to add in the infinite wisdom about Virus Scans (who knows what they included) along with the other “wonderful” features they added.

I have Windows 10 Home Version 1909 and run Norton 360 as my virus/firewall protection. Windows Defender isn’t used other than the occasional virus scan

      I installed 3 updates when I received AskWoody’s MS-DEFCON 4 alert on 6/2/2020 (CCleaner v5.67 ran fine on 5/31/2020):

      1 – KB4497165: Intel microcode updates
2 – May 12, 2020-KB4552931 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1903 and Windows Server 1903 RTM and Windows 10, version 1909 and Windows Server, version 1909
      3 – May 12, 2020—KB4556799 (OS Builds 18362.836 and 18363.836)

I was running CCleaner v5.67 without a problem until the 6/2/2020 Windows Update.  I even tried to install v5.66 without any success.

I tried turning off Norton 360 – which says CCleaner is an approved software.  I excluded CCleaner from both Norton and Defender – with no success.

What are the best alternatives (free) out there to CCleaner?

One of the recent Windows updates turned on the Night Light feature on me starting at 9pm.  Just go to Display in the settings and turn off the darn night light.

Thanks for the info.  I have Win 10 1909 and Norton 360 and a PC I bought about 6 months ago.  I was able to run CCleaner the day before I did the Issue 17.21.1 – 2020-06-01 – Alert MS-DEFCON 4 update, so I suspect they changed one of the MS settings.

I thought Norton 360 disabled Defender, so I haven’t paid much attention to it.  I guess I will have to figure out what settings to change (and then install as Carl D suggested).

      I will try this tomorrow.

    • The latest install messed up my background.  It changed from the background I had my desktop set to (Northern lights) to a grainy picture/color.  I noticed it changed the frequency of how often it would change pictures.  I used to have 1, 3, 5, 10 minutes, but now it is 1, 10, 30, 60 minutes.

I know this was previously a problem for some people/PCs with Windows 10 Home, but I thought MS fixed this bug.

Thanks DriftyDan – I agree 100% with Microsoft fraking things up lately.  I’ve always liked Norton, but ever since Symantec was purchased by Broadcom and combined with LifeLock its quality has gone hill.  Also – I can’t stand the daily pop-ups that ask if you want to ignore in the future and then next day give you same/similar pop-up & too many false positives (at least they let you overrule).

I am curious about the same thing as StantheMan (Mr.) – when I bought my Win10 PC the tech guy said that Windows Defender was perfectly adequate for home use.  At the time I still had almost a year left on Norton subscription which is now expiring in 3 weeks.

I’ve been using Norton and then – similar to joep517 – I run Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, AdwCleaner every 2-3 weeks.

Since Microsoft appears to being trying ruin Windows Defender I was curious if Windows Defender was enough and if not then what the best 3rd party to use is.

I just installed all updates on my Win10 v1909 home edition without a problem.  I found it interesting that everything installed except KB4535996 which is sitting my optional updates queue.  I’m going to release until MS-DEFCON gets lower than 3 or someone finally confirmed that KB4535996 is safe to installed.  blueboy714
