      Thanks for the replies.

      **

In every version of Windows through Windows 10 version 1909 I’ve been able to double click the file I want to install or right-click “run” and the program was installed on my computer.

Since Win10 installed 2004 update this has not the case.  I’ve been forced to “Run as Administrator” and then it take a few minutes to start the install the program.

My user account is already “Local Admin Account”. In the UAC it is set to “notify me only when apps try to make changes to computer” (the default), so I’m not sure what sort of change 2004 made – but it’s frustrating.

Before 2004 when I double clicked a file it gave me a prompt that said I need admin rights (which I already have).  Since the 2004 update after I double click a file from WinExp it seemingly does nothing.  There is no activity in the task activity, so I have reboot my PC.

Whatever change Microsoft and 2004 made it’s frustrating as he$$.

Update – I just figured out that the 2004 update changed my settings to needing administrative rights to install an app/program.  It is my personal PC and I have admin rights – but how do I change this setting back so I can install WITHOUT admin rights?   Thanks for your help.

Windows will check for updates, but if you have Pause or deferrals set, it won’t find them until the delay period has ended.

See AKB2000016 Sections 2 and 5 for settings for Windows Update for v2004.

thanks – I have Win10 home.  Is this a wonderful new feature for 2004 – appearing to search for updates even though it isn’t really looking for any?  It wasn’t this way with 1909.   I’m getting too old for this.

I am not sure what the PowerShell copy the 2 lines of code you indicate in Section 2 will do but I copied the 2 lines of code and the Windows Update stopped running in an infinite loop looking for updates and now says it won’t check for updates until Feb 9, 2021.

      Thanks

Thank you everyone.  I ended installing 2004 so I could get December updates – it’s frustrating that MS shoves things down your throat like that.  I am a bit worried because my PC uses a lot of ASUS products – which were causing problems with some people earlier.  Fortunately ASUS must have figured out workarounds for MS 2004 bug issues and – SO FAR – every thing seems ok.  Cross my finger/knock on wood.

Thanks for the info on converting Win 10 home to pro.  I will research a bit and figure out which route I want to go for my home PC (heck – my employer is still using Win7).

Would you consider updating to Pro?  This is why I recommend pro, this is why I recommend using the targeted release setting.  You have much more options to control updates.  It should still be an optional update in the update window not a forced.

Thanks Susan for responding. Had I known there were so many dangerous differences between home and pro when I bought Win10 I would bought pro. I wouldn’t have a problem installing 2004 other than all of the negative things I’ve heard about it and the fact that isn’t that much different from 1909.  Regarding switch from home to pro a couple questions:

Don’t you have to have all updates installed before switching from home to pro?

Can I run same programs/apps on pro that I am currently running on home?

How much time does it take to update from home to pro and what is the cost?

I have 1909 on my relatively new Lenovo laptop, and just started the update procedure after pausing it.  It is installing the 1909 update, without any hint of 2004.  So, it doesn’t appear that Microsoft is automatically forcing 2004 here.

Don’t know if this help but the first 2 updates it tries to make on my PC are:

Feature update to Windows 10 version 2004

Help – I have Windows 10 home and I am currently on 1909 because we are at DEFCON 4.  I am trying to install my December updates and one of the updates is “Feature update to Windows 10 – version 2004.

Is MS now forcing version 2004 down people’s throat without any choice??  What the heck is going on?

Woody discussed this in an article a few months ago – https://www.computerworld.com/article/3561597/some-win10-pcs-are-apparently-being-upgraded-to-version-2004-without-consent.html

The reports I’ve seen point to a combination of factors:

      • The Win10 1903 or 1909 PC must be “ready to upgrade” according to Microsoft’s magic “AI;”
      • You have “Pause updates” turned on;
      • Either the “Pause” expires, or you manually turn it off (possibly by altering a Registry setting, possibly by clicking “Resume updates”).

I am manually turning on the pause.

PS – I turned off the updates until I heard from those that know more than me.

Good god no.  MS has messed up enough things in Windows 10 that I don’t confidence in Hello.  When they fix all of the update bugs and 20H2 I will think about.

Alex5723: you said “You can install 2004 via windows update if you create a registry key for TVR set to 2004.”. Can you explain in more details, please? I could not find the details in the comments on AKB 2000016. My W10 Home machine has been offered 20H2, not 2004. My W10 Pro has not been offered 2004. I think they both may have the Conexant problem? How do I find out?

Good – I’m not the only one that was totally lost by Alex5723 TRV comment.  I hate messing around with the registry but so be it.

I have Windows 10 Home – I wish MS gave us the option of installing 2004, but we can’t since they released 20H2. It would be nice if they got the the major and moderate bugs out of one update before releasing another.

Yes – Susan added a warning to her article saying WU for 2004  was no longer available – only 20H2 using this method.

As a power user of Excel, I can tell you that the alternatives don’t come close. Trust me, I would love to get rid of my dependency on this excellent product so I can avoid the subscription trap that will probably be difficult to escape down the road, Microsoft having reduced the support time from 10 to 7 years on Office 2019 vs the previous versions.

We use LibreOffice (similar to Open Office but maybe more supported) for some people at work whose needs are basic and don’t need to maintain compatibility with Office on complex documents. See the following for some reasons as to why it is still not a suitable replacement for Office. And Office keeps many people on Windows, it has never run seamlessly on Linux from what I understood.

      https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/libreoffice-7-review.html

Also, businesses (not us) usually run Outlook for email and that is a not minor part of Office.

What is very sad with that is for people with lower income, it is not nice to shove the subscription model down their throat when they would be perfectly happy using the equivalent of the 2010 version of this mature product patched for security forever, but then who would that much want to pay more for frequent updates? The results is lower access to mature technologies, just like Adobe did with Photoshop, for casual users.

This is the Catch 22 – I purchase a lot of add-ons for Office (esp. Excel) from some very good companies/individuals so I don’t have to spend my time figuring them out.  I’ve noticed a lot of these people are also creating add-ons for OpenOffice too now – so there is slow shift away from Office.

I only use MS-Office because my employer – up until last year – allowed us to purchase a home-use Office CD for $20 with 5 installs.  I find Office 365 awful (my employer has switched to that) and now recommend to anyone that asks LibreOffice or OpenOffice and Mozilla Thunderbird depending on their needs.  I would rather throw my money at those user supported apps than MS-Office.  If MS-Office reduce the price on their CD installs rather than forcing 365 down our throat I’d start recommending and using them again
