      Not so fast!

Stupid me. I have not installed the April update yet. Susan was just announcing ahead that the update included a fix for the printers. Some many months, so many updates, so many versions. How does one keep up?

I only update when Ask Woody tells me it’s safe to update

Susan wrote “The April Windows 10 update will fix the issue affecting some printers connected via USB”.  Not so fast!

For my Home Win 10 with a home type Epson printer connected via USB, it has started acting weird after recent Win updates.

      1) Either it comes on and spits out several pages of nonsense characters or

      2) It comes up with status “offline”. The only way to get it online (tried unplugging, turning off and on, clearing queue – all to no avail) is to restart Win 10. Then it comes up ready as soon as the restart comes on.

Never had any problems with this printer for years until now.

I also get Epson update notices and do them immediately.

It deleted my HP printer driver – but I was able to add it back to my drivers and it was fine.

Thanks.  Is the pay version of 0patch any better than the free version for a home user.  I already have all of the past MS updates and 0patch’s website for the pay version doesn’t seem to cover anything beyond 0patches.

Susan – have you heard anything definite about when MS could release Windows 12?  I suspect it will be in the fall when Win10 end of life occurs.  I know Win12 would be quite buggy for a while so I’m hoping to wait until they get most of initial release bugs fixed before buying a new desktop.  Unfortunately they could take months or years.

If you are at all interested in using PowerShell with Defender then have a look at this Microsoft Learn Defender article showing the commands available and their uses.

      Hope this helps…

I’ll take a look. I uninstalled Norton over the weekend because it had become so invasive and restrictive and used way too much CPU. Right now I’m just using Defender and trying to learn more about it

I have never used Norton, but if you are now looking at having to use the “not so easy to configure” Windows Firewall (WF), you could “enhance” it by using the free “Windows Firewall Control (WFC)” program, which is now owned and maintained by the same “Malwarebytes” company that owns and maintain the Malwarebytes AntiMalware (MBAM) product.

Isn’t Malwarebytes/Binsoft WFC still in beta testing?  The last time I read about it it wasn’t an official release yet.

That’s exactly what Norton is doing now. 4 or 5 times a day. I’m getting sick of the popups.

      Hi blueboy714:

Norton 360 doesn’t really exist as a unique product anymore since parent company Gen Digital began sharing technologies between their subsidiaries.  It essentially became an Avast AV re-branded as a Norton product in September 2024.

Norton abandoned the Norton scan engine and has been using an Avast scan engine since the Norton v24 product line described in the 10-Sep-2024 product announcement Introducing Norton Security v.24! was released. See the 17-Sep-2024 HackerDose article One Less Scanner? Norton Antivirus Jumps on Avast’s Engine.

See Specialist17’s May 24, 2024 topic Norton Security now silently installs Avast software? for a discussion on this topic.

Yeah – I knew about the Norton/Avast thing – that’s part of the problem.

    • in reply to: Microsoft Defender as Primary Security Question #2755293

I have always used the MS antivirus product (Security Essentials, Defender, whatever the name du jour is/was) on my Windows computers, and it has worked very well. I was the sole user of a Win 10 computer that belonged to an organiation I volunteered for that used Norton. The organization decided what security products to use. I forget the exact name of the product but it cost about $100/year. It was easy enough to use and worked well but it got to be extremely annoying because they were always trying to upsell to one of their other products. When I left the organization I recommended they save the money and just use the MS product.

That’s exactly what Norton is doing now.  4 or 5 times a day. I’m getting sick of the popups.

Thanks @lmacri – I already use free versions of Malware Bytes and Super Antivirus along with Norton AV.  Might be worth it to see if I can hit a deal like you mentioned.  I’ve done that with other software in the past.

    • Photos is embedded in Win10.  I’d have to uninstall Win10 in order to correct the problem.

This is from MS – but it doesn’t work for people either.

If opening a Microsoft Account is required to get these ESU patches, then I’ll stick with 0patch, thank you very much. That, plus the multiple layers of defense that I put around my EOS systems as detailed in the first line of my signature below.

Thanks good to know 0patch works.  I was considering the $30 MS extended updates plan – but why bother with giving MS more money.  I’d rather support 0patch if it works well.

Good article.  I absolute hate Office 365 and know too many people that have switched to Open Office or Libre Office or something else rather than pay annual fees.   I am still trying to decide if I want to Office 2024 when I get a new PC or go with a free alternative.
