    • in reply to: Why does Word 2010 keep switching Autocorrect lists? #1586622

Through experimentation, I’ve learned that Word chooses which acl file (AutoCorrect list) to use based on the language of the first file you work on during the current session. Then it continues to use that acl file for the remainder of the session, even if you work on documents or sections of documents that use a different language.

The only way I have found to force it to use a different acl file is to close Word, re-open it, and immediately open a document that uses the language that corresponds to the acl file you want to use.

It’s clumsy, but it works. Hopefully this will save someone else some frustration.

I’ve seen articles about turn language auto-detection off. That seems to help some people with Autocorrect issues.

Oh, I was so hoping that this would solve my problem, but I checked and it’s already turned off.

Thanks for the suggestion, one more thing to cross off the list.

    • in reply to: saving new styles as default #1585119

      Hi,

If you want the new styles to be present in all new documents, you need to save them in your Normal template.

Here’s one way to do it. This method assumes that the document where you created the new styles is based on Normal.dot.

      – Right click the style (in the Quick Styles gallery or in the Styles Pane), and choose Modify.
      – Select the option called “New documents based on this template”
      – Click OK.
      – Repeat for each of the styles that you want to have available by default.
      – Save the document.
      – Close Word. Depending on your Save settings, you may be asked if you want to save changes that affect the Normal template. You do.
      – Restart Word. The styles you added to the Normal template should be present in all new documents you create from now on based on Normal.

You can use the same technique to add (or update) styles in templates other than Normal.dot. It saves the style to whatever template is attached to the document. Future files based on that template will contain the styles you added.

However, this technique does not add the styles to existing documents. To import them to documents you’ve already created, there are two options that spring to mind.

      Method 1 (recommended):

      – Perform the steps above to save the styles to a template.
      – Open the document you want to import the styles to. It must be attached to the template that contains the styles you want to import.
      – Click the Document Template button in the Templates section of the Developer tab. (If you don’t see a Developer tab, go to File | Options | Customize Ribbon to display it.)
      – Enable the “Automatically update document styles” option.
      – Click OK.

The styles in the document will be updated to match the styles in the template.

      Method 2 (quick, but limited):
      – In the document where you created the styles, select text that is formatted with the style(s) that you want to import to another document.
      – Copy the text.
      – Paste it into the destination document. The styles get imported along with the pasted text.

Caveat: This only copies styles that don’t yet exist in the destination document. If you want to transfer styles that already exist in both documents but that you have changed in one of them, this method won’t work.

      I hope this helps.

    • Didn’t know posting in more than one forum was a no-no. Sorry.

    • in reply to: Copy entire template #1388388

If I were designing a solution to this problem I would do as Andrew suggested – move the text into the template. Trying to create a macro to reproduce the margins and other page settings is complex and runs a high risk of missing some of the settings.

Instead, you could create a macro that selects all, copies the selected text, then selects a template, creates a new document based on that template, and pastes the copied text. That way you don’t risk losing any of your template settings.

Would that work in your situation?

    • in reply to: Word 2010 Bullets disappear from styles #1356632

Thanks for the suggestions. In the environment where these templates are being used it is extremely unlikely that the problem is a result of users altering them, but I may write protect them just in case. I like the macro suggestion – that will be very helpful if the problem persists.

    • in reply to: Can I search for files by length of path/filename? #1336988

Well, UltraFileSearch solved my problem indirectly. While it can’t search on the basis of length of name+path, it did let me export the search results to a file. I opened the file in Excel, created a formula to calculate name length, and then sorted.

      So thanks for the suggestion!

Oh, forgot to mention that I’m using Windows 7 Home Premium.

    • in reply to: Word 2010 unable to copy/paste tables #1336921

Thank you! Installing the update didn’t help, I had to uninstall both Skype Click-to-Call and Skype itself, but Word is working normally again. So happy!

    • in reply to: Word 2010 unable to copy/paste tables #1336755

I have exactly the same problem. When I copy a table, or portion of a table, and then paste it, it always pastes as unformatted text. This is new behaviour in the past couple of days. I have no add-ins or macros, and I re-named Normal.dot.

      Did you find a solution?

      Thanks
