      Hi Zelbar, and All!

This is quite a while after you had your problems, but I’ve just started having similar problems now.

I have no games on my computer (not that I play anyway). Do you use WinZip 6.5 Pro, 64-bit? I tried to work back to when the problems started and the only thing I had changed lately was I updated WinZip Pro.

I do a backup run every Saturday with it and I noticed it ran extremely slow last week, ditto this week. However, a few other instances of problems in Windows Explorer this week make me believe it’s Explorer, although I suppose something in WinZip perhaps could have had an affect on WinExpl.

At this point I hoped if I looked on the Lounge I’d find a suggested fix, but since I don’t do anything that uses graphics too much I find it hard to suspect a graphics driver.

Did you ever figure it out?

Until I can figure it out I’ll just have to put up with extremely slow running of programs that seem to associate Windows Explorer. I’d suggest any suggestions.

    • in reply to: Cannot control windows opening sizes. #1326314

      I understand RalphAllan’s complaint.

I find similar problems if you use a number of the same program versions on your screen at the same time. For example, Windows explorer! There’s a function that I like to handle on a fairly regular basis in which I have three windows open on my screen at the same time and I can work back and forth between the windows okay. But, when I sign on again it sure would be nice if I could get the three different windows to come up the way they were in use previously.

If you’re listening Microsoft and other software manufacturers, probably all that would be needed would be to carry (for example) the last ten windows settings in memory. As that particular program is invoked, the windows could come up in sequence starting with the last setting to the tenth-last setting each time the User starts up. That should probably handle most any normal requests. In my case, the last to third-last settings would probably always be there when I started up.

As bbearen says, using different sizes for different applications is no problem. The problem comes up when trying to work on a number of window sizes for windows from the same application being used at the same time. I HAVE A LARGE/WIDE SCREEN and perhaps the others complaining have as well – the capability should be available.

    • in reply to: Acronis restore question #1306566

Thank you for your responses Hildernaecg and Ruirib.

No, Hildernaecg, it wasn’t quite like the .html page you sent Ruirib to, but similar.

I’m talking about the capability in Win7 to have a Virtual system set up within Win7 to allow the running of WinXP within the Virtual system. It does set up Virtual Folders and Files to go along with it.

I used this configuration when I was first moving/converting from WinXP to Win7 to allow me to continue using WinXP apps until I had their conversion to Win7 complete. After I was completely done with all the conversions, I uninstalled the Virtual XP system and all the files, etc. which left me running solely with/in Win7.

What I did was, after I had a few problems one day, I made the mistake of attempting to restore from an Acronis image that still had all the Virtual XP system and files on it. I guess I made the assumption, like I said in my original comment, that everything would be restored, even the Virtual XP system. My problems started occuring because it only restored the Files, etc., and not the system.

I thought I had completely gotten rid of all the Virtual stuff, but, again, as I mentioned earlier, I saw the word “Virtual” somewhere which now tweaks me that there is still some of the Virtual system and Files on my system.

I MADE THE COMMENT SOLELY TO MAKE ANY ACRONIS USERS/POSSIBLE ACRONIS USERS AWARE THAT THEY SHOULD WATCH THESE TYPES OF SCENARIOS OR THEY MIGHT RUN INTO THE SAME PROBLEM I DID.

I’m presently searching for an Image Backup/Recovery style system other than Acronis that I might use instead of Acronis. Acronis could be good, possibly, if they would fix problems/bugs found, instead of just including them in the next version thereby forcing a customer to pay for corrections, something I heartily disagree with. That BLAST comes after working in the design/programming field for over 40 years, in a consulting role the last 25 of those years. PAYING FOR CORRECTION TO PROGRAM BUGS IS A NO-NO AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED. IF SOMEONE HAS PAID FOR YOUR SOFTWARE ALREADY, THEY SHOULDN’T HAVE TO PAY AGAIN TO GET CORRECTIONS. SURE, ISSUE CHARGEABLE NEW RELEASES WITH GREAT NEW FEATURES IF YOU WANT, BUT FIX THE PROBLEMS IN THE ORIGINAL RELEASES FOR THOSE CUSTOMERS WHO DON’T PARTICULARLY WISH ALL THE FANCY NEW STUFF.

      Thank you for responding ruirib.

When I click the link, it invokes a new tab in IE9, but then just sits there and does nothing.

      Hi JMac001!
I used to use Nuance’s PDF Converter 4 (can’t remember whether it was Pro Version or not, I believe so). I eventually stopped using it because it just couldn’t handle so many of the PDFs I wanted to convert. Is Version Pro 7 any better? Please advise your experience with it. Will it convert a .pdf to a reader-type file? How about in other languages such as French, Latin, German and Italian?

    • I have to be honest in the fact that I’ve never received this message and I’ve used Outlook2010 since it first came out with MS Office. If it keeps happening all the time it sounds to me like some of the program objects might be damaged. An idea could be to try the repair option available on most re-installs, or, failing that, try a full uninstall and then reinstall. Again, I’ve not had to do this since I’ve not had problems with any of my MS Office apps, but it’s a suggestion.

    • in reply to: Where can I find a manual for Facebook? #1305258

A few years ago, just after Facebook was getting a lot of really negative publicity about the site’s security, a lady by the name of Angela Alcom wrote a manuscript called “The Unofficial Facebook Privacy Manual”. I believe it was available either at http://www.MakeUseOf.com or http://www.netsavoir.com . I don’t know whether it’s still around or not, or how up-to-date it might be. That’s the only reference I’ve ever seen except for, of course, the Facebook site itself, which isn’t that easy to follow.

Regarding the indexing/search applications and your statement “Look for a primer on Windows 7 search here in Windows Secrets Newsletter later this year. It’s an important topic, for which a few tips can make a world of difference.”
In general I find the search features in Win7 and Office 2010 great compared to some of the older versions, BUT, I find the search feature in Outlook 2010, that used to work very well before, always seems to need sorting prior to using instead of being pre-sorted as part of the automatic sorting features. AND, even though I have both Win7 and Office 2010 64-bit, the Outlook sort of messages seems dreadfully slow when necessary.
I hope your future primer intends to cover this area.

    • in reply to: Internet connection stops working #1285080

I think it may be possible that problems like this may have started occurring this week because a lot of the main testing for IPV6 started (or was scheduled to start anyway) with some sites and ISPs as of last week. I haven’t had any problems myself, but don’t know if something like this might cause people problems.

    • in reply to: Win7 said Java didn’t install correctly #1277755

We have two Win7-64bit computers in the house. On one, both the Java 64-bit and the 32-bit (for compatibility) installed and seem to work fine. On the other neither version will install and I keep getting an:
Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%

We are running in Administrator mode!!!

    • in reply to: Upgrading to 2010 #1274850

I am using Access 2010 64-bit. I’ve been reading/boning up on differences from earlier Access by reading a couple of the books. They all mention 32-bit references, files, etc – probably just quick rewrites from earlier versions. Are the 64-bit files, etc. available?

    • in reply to: Determine path of .xla #1273436

The easiest way to do this I would think, would be to use a different User Profile for development than your production operational Profile. That way the object/program you’re using the .xla with, along with other test files, etc., can be kept in the area associated with the development User Profile. Of course it means you need to sign on to that profile while you’re testing, but it would allow you to test to your heart’s content, not only the .xla, but everything associated with your testing, until you’re ready to move things into your production operational Profile.

    • in reply to: Help on multiple conditions formula, please #1269022

You could use VBA to program/write a function to respond with what you want. I did this for an unavailable financial formula when I was trying to do a calculation for determining ROI that was different than what was available within the included functions in Excel.

    • in reply to: What you need to know about Windows 7 SP1 #1269020

I noticed you referenced the third-party software LogMeIn in this article. I’ve been trying to determine if an Apple iPad could allow me to read not only the books, etc., that are advertised all over the place, but also let me read email, pdf files, doc files, etc. etc. on my PCs. They seem to offer LogMeIn as the capability to do that – do you have any experience with that, or anything you can comment on in this regard. I’ve been watching different readers for some time and my aging eyes finally see, in the iPad, a screen capable of being readable enough (because of its larger size and its capability to enlarge what’s being read). I feel I could save a lot of paper if I had this capability because I feel, even now, it’s just impossible to always sit at a PC screen to read everything I want to read. I also wonder if the iPad can be used both on my home and office wireless network, as well as an outside network to use the LogMeIn with (i.e. from a client location, research center, etc.). I’d appreciate any thoughts you (or anyone) might have on this. My eyesight is my biggest problem in this area – I’ve never been able to use cell phones with all the tiny text.
