      Thanks Paul,

I don’t think we can use POP3 as we don’t want to double handle everything. So, once one operator has dealt with the situation, then others don’t have to get involved. As long as the read mode is clear, that should be fine.  With respect to sent messages, what do you mean by “stored in the correct location”. As long as this is in the sent folder and this folder is identical on each pc , I think that is fine. In that case anyone could do a search for a specific email address on their respective pc and see the correspondence with this customer, right?

As far as archiving is concerned, maybe my terminology is wrong. I am basically thinking of a folder hierarchy of  Inquiries  New and dealt with, so the Inbox has a subfolder (Finalised or Responded) , the Sent folder should show all sent responses. Very simple – maybe twice a year someone might clean up and use some form of Archive Folders for (Inbox dealt with) and Sent  if older than 6 months.

Would that work?    In theory I could achieve the same thing with a webbased account but would prefer to have operators just open their outlook on the pc instead of having to log in via the web.

      Paul,

thanks a lot – working now fine and did not need to use the helper cell.  Still will read up on the info in this link later this week when I have more time.

      Much appreciate all the help

      Paul,

in principle the Item no is numeric and has 5 digits but for a limited number of cells that rule is broken and the number is in the format J + 5 digits. As the J numbers are the exception and will not be used much longer, I will play with the Helper cell but think maybe my prime issue at the moment is not using the $ sign. I not sure how this should be applied correctly.  I also note that in formula the system generated a ! but your formula is using a . (dot) – what is the difference and effect? Do I need a $ sign before Table? That always comes up with an error.

Hello everyone and thank you for your assistance.  I think I am trying some of the suggestions already but probably not in a consistent or correct form. I will study the referenced link from Lawrence later this week when I have more time but as a first step, I attach a file with some sample info.

The spreadsheet is simplified with most columns removed – just for info in the original the final column currently is CJ and the number of rows is 4365.

In my sample I am trying have a “marker” in column N if the item as referenced in column B is shown in the table in column O.  I also want to have a “indicator” in Column K in the main sheet if the referenced Item no appears in the array in column A in the table.

I tried formatting both columns, cutting and pasting but without a full success.  Strangely enough (for me) I do get output but not for the whole rows. Items that are clearly included in the table still show up as #N/A  when they should have value,  e.g. Item No 11253.

I can see how useful this function would be for me but can’t quite get there.

      Cheers

      Beethoven

      Excellent – many thanks

    • in reply to: conditional formatting on column #2279103

      RG,

as mentioned it’s very basic and works in one column but not the next one. I did not enter a formula, just used the Conditional formatting box, chose Format only top or bottom ranked values, used 10 % percent, applied formatting and applied it to the whole column as =$B:$B

I am doing this on 5 columns and while I can set up the proper ranges like =$I$2:$I$2124, I need to extend this down every day and just would like to simply this.

Jabeatty, thank you – I think this is exactly what I noticed this morning.

Thanks Tsman,  I don’t like the reset button but have already tried this twice, each time giving it a long time to finally “jump over whatever hurdle” is there but so far no luck. Not sure if something in the final update is corrupted and given that it is a new build, I might be better off redoing the installation at this early stage. Just downloading a fresh installation media for 1909, so at least I don’t have to move from an earlier version to 1909.

PK,  sorry but you misunderstand. The question where to download or which folder to use as default is fine and has been the same in Win 7.  What annoys me is that once this command has gone through and the file was downloaded, explorer opens up again, maybe to assist you to doubleclick and then open the download but I don’t want that. Not everything I download needs to be dealt with immediately.

      Hi PK,

this morning I did a screenshot with an external program but I noticed that previously with other programs too. Downloads from the browser don’t seem to be affected but I think it happened when I scanned something. I will try to pay attention next time I get irritated by this behaviour.

One other idiosyncrasy I noticed is that while doubleclicking a pdf file will open it with Sumatra as my preferred reader but the file remains in the background, so I need to click on the tab first.  In Win 7 the file opened maximised. Again, this is a minor annoyance but is there a way to get the same behaviour in Win 10.

      Hi Paul,

unfortunately that is not always possible as the data comes from a website where customers enter their addresses or details themselves, often in ways that are not correct or making sense.  So the issue is not so much data that we correct ourselves but data that is being entered by customers (sometimes invisible when they may use a cut and paste from a browser helper and this way not using proper csv characters or as MN- suggested perhaps using a different MS office language plugin. Ideally when a file is being rejected for import, I would like to have a feature/ application/ macro that would allow me to pinpoint the “offending” entry as this would also allow me to possibly amend this at the source (on the website) to prevent this from happening again by the same customer.  However if as it appears there is no straightforward solution, I guess the cut / paste value is the easiest way to deal with it.

Did some additional testing just to see if I can reproduce the issue (in order to avoid it in future) and to see how I can make use of HxD.

Unfortunately, I cannot really interpret what I am seeing.

In the attached example of a file that had “only” the name changed, one error was shown as demonstrated in the side by side screenshot with the highlights. I did not change any dot to comma.  However in a subsequent test I then changed data in one of the cells (the first cell after the dots) from 137WEB to 136WEB.  This was a change common to modify this sheet prior to upload and after making this change, it was not highlighted.

Does that mean that the changes highlighted have nothing to do with “real” changes but only relate to invisible formatting?  I do get the warning each time when saving some formatting being incompatible and I click yes to save (as csv).  I am not sure if someone saved this as xls first and then resaved as csv this would lead to the original failure?

thanks again – at least we seem to have a way to check if a file has some hidden changes and the original copy / paste values option worked

    • in reply to: Identify problem characters #2006438

      Hi MN-,

thank you – I downloaded HxD and used a compare function and it confirmed that the files were different, though it’s not apparent to the naked eye. Looking at the attached screenshot,  I suspect that during the processing of the file, we somehow saved it incorrectly thus messing up the characters but I don’t know enough to draw any other conclusions. It seems to me it is not a specific field that was wrong. Does the additional ” appearing in all the fields shed any more light on this? The file on the left with the ” is the correct working one, the one on the right with the ” stripped is failing to upload. Just trying to understand and explain to others who do this process what to look out for or avoid doing.

Thank you PCCano – that’s the thread I remembered but could not find. Now let’s see if I can manage to follow the prompts.
