AskWoody LoungerMarch 5, 2024 at 8:51 am in reply to: Can my Non OS Bitlocker Drives Be accessed using Windows Recovery Environment ? #2645396I went to WRE on the PC I mentioned. I tried to find a way to access one of my Bitlocker drives without a password/key. I could not do it. Of course this does not mean it can’t be done.(my knowledge in this area is very limited)
I went as far as trying to use an image (created by Windows Back Up) that resides on one of my Bitlocker encrypted drives to “recover” the PC. The PC rebooted but could not find the image. You would assume from this that the Bitlocker encrypted image could not be accessed. This is one experiment performed by “tech limited” user.
I found this webpage https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/267720/why-when-does-patching-cve-2022-41099-bitlocker-bypass-require-extra-steps.
It seems to me that they think even if you update to patch the vulnerability it is meaning less. Reason being that a hacker can leave one of there PCs unpatched., so if they get hold of a Bitlocker encrypted drive they can access it from their unpatched PC using WRE. This leads me to believe that Bitlocker now has a vulnerability that can never be totally patched.
It might be time to use a non MS method of encryption.

AskWoody LoungerHow do I stop emails I am getting about this post ?
-

AskWoody LoungerI am not sure I understand this but here I go anyway:
Let us say this gets resolved either by resizing Rec Partition or MS fixing.
Now what happens to my Bit Locker encrypted thumb drives a SSDs. Can someone who has a PC that has not done the update plug in my BL Thumb drive into their PC and bypass the encryption ?
This would be a much more serious issue. Hackers would leave one of there PCs not updated so they could use it get into BL Encrypted drives.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 27, 2023 at 7:32 pm in reply to: W10 22H2 Desktop rogue icon won’t allow me to rename, delete, or replace it #2547206This happened on my system a few days ago. I tried everything I could think of and many online suggestions. I finally decided to use System Restore. I had Restore Point for a day before. When it completed the nasty little bugger was gone. I could be wrong but this seems to be a recent phenomenon, which makes me suspect Windows Update.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 4, 2022 at 7:16 pm in reply to: My Internet Service Provider seems to be deteriorating #2474947I had a similar issue and I found that changing the DNS from the ISP helped. I used google DNS of 8.8.8.8 and back up DNS of 8.8.4.4. That was awhile ago .Not sure if that would work now, so make a note of present DNS so you can change back to the way it was if it doesn’t work.

AskWoody LoungerI know it has been over a year but did you ever resolve this issue ? I have had had it for a long time. As you say Refresh of Desktop gets it back to normal until next time it happens.

AskWoody LoungerJune 30, 2022 at 5:31 pm in reply to: June windows Update, Shell Infrastructure Host, Higher RAM #2457592Thank you for your questions.
Shell Infrastructure Host was taking 15% of Ram (consistently for 2 or 3 hours. I never saw it as top RAM user, but it was. Usually when idle top RAM is used by Windows Explorer or Antivirus or Malwarebytes or start up of a program. Shell Infrastructure Host is usually less than 1%.
Your excellent question about reboot was a good one. I rebooted and its back to under 1%. It has only been 20 minutes but if that changes I will post.
