that is what i will look at in open/libre office.

any reason to choose one over the other?

changing default save format is something I need to check. I can’t remember if that wasn’t an option last time,  or if I was required to change the save extension at every save.

iac: time to run through the programs used on the x360 and see how it will look.  I believe it is possible to put linux on a flash drive and run from there, to see how it will go if I switch.   fortunately, I have plenty of time to experiment.

every few years I consider Linux.  Then don’t proceed with it because of some programs that won’t run on Linux, or because of conflicts in using win on some computers and linux on others regarding data kept in cloud, eg xls or docx.  The linux apps would change the extensions, leaving me with dual copies out of sync.

I can take another look, see if situation has changed.

this premature, since I am going to wait for Susan Bradley’s handy guide to moving win10 to win11.

However, I am foreseeing issues on one device: HP x360 11.6″ convertible, which I use only for some web browsing, as media device and when traveling. (I have other computers for other things).  It came with only 128 gb of memory built onto m.b..  I have a 128gb flash in its micro-sd slot for holding most data.  The built in memory is currently partitioned into a C: 92gb used, 15gb free,   and D: with 4gb used and 20 gb free.

Even if I temporarily eliminate the D: partition, I’ll only have 40gb free.  Unless I can figure out a way to tell win11 to use a flash drive for installation and it really needs 64gb of free space,  upgrading will likely not work .   (Also I haven’t yet run the Installation Wizard to see what other hardware issues there may be. )

I guess I could wipe the memory and do a fresh install, then spend a day putting it back together,   or just stay with win10 until the x360 dies.  Or I do.

That said, I don’t beleive that WhatsApp is uploading a users entire contact list to Meta’s servers. WhatsApp links to a users contact list (you have to give permission) so that people  in WhatsApp can be linked to your own contact list.

I don’t see how it Meta can review a contact list for other whatsapp users without uploading all of it.

“we’ll upload the contact list just to look for other users,  but not remember any of the others”.  Really?  Right.

I might be happy to manually enter the few people I want to contact through whatsapp.  I am not likely to be using whatsapp to contact everyone, just because they installed whatsapp some time in the past.  I know, meta, assumes, can’t believe that I wouldn’t want to, communicate with everyone only through their system.

I know a lot of people, in and out of U.S. use Whatsapp.  When I started to install it, many years ago, and found that it was starting to upload my entire contact list, I stopped the install and never looked at it again.  Now, owned by Meta, I still leery of it.

What do you have to say about Whatsapp and privacy?

you mentioned the minimum 64 gb of storage, hopefully much more.  I have often been unsure of what different writers are referring to when they mention “storage”.  similarly in this case.

amount of free space on C: drive?  Total space on C:?  Space on another logical drive?  Ram?

Will it matter if the win11 iso is running from flash drive, a logical drive different from C:?

    • in reply to: I installed Windows 11 24H2 #2763013

I gave up on Windows Explorer years ago.  After looking at a number of other options, I decided to go with Tablacus Explorer.  Open source, community driven.  Its a basic app, needing addins for whatever functions you want to add to it.  The community if pretty helpful, getting me over the initial hump getting it to do what I want.  I can see multiple windows, vertically  or horizontally (a huge lack in Windows Explore), preview pane for pics, (an addin) , and a pin to keep it on top when necessary (an addin), opens multiple tabs and re-opens them after restarting the program, or I could set up multiple layouts (which I don’t use). It takes little memory and the interface isn’t full of icons for things I don’t use.

But it isn’t for those that don’t want to spend some time setting it up and making modifications. ie: it is techie.

    • in reply to: Winupdatehub and options during install or updates #2751499

guess that I have answered the principal question myself: there is a setting to either let winupdatehub install silently, or have each app go through the options, as it would if I was applying the update.  with Reflect as backup, I have tried it, and it indeed works as it claims.

I have found that winupdatehub offered many more apps for updating than patchmypc, though patchmypc did offer one that winupdatehub did not.   All my commonly used apps patchmypc took care of.

each app, if done with options, opens a window which stays there till update completes. this means that more than one update can’t happen at a time. Also, the updated versions of apps isn’t downloaded, only the updated files. therefore, my collection of app installation files will grow more and more outdated.

at this point, I’ll continue using winupdatehub for a couple of cycles, and see if I think it is worth using.

    • in reply to: A much better way to manage Excel formulas #2741106

sounds interesting.  Might even have gotten me to start using formulas in excel.  However, like most things MS, I can’t get it to install(?), can’t find it.  Get error messages about changing privacy settings, which I did and made no difference.,  instruction about finding the addin under insert>my add-ins,  but, of course, no my add-in section in the insert tab.  etc, etc.

seemed like an intriguing idea,  but I’ve run out of time for dealing with it.

    • I have never felt comfortable using Paypal (similarly with Amazon, which I use occasionally as last resort) because I don’t feel they are clear about what I am ‘buying into’ when using them, having to be extremely careful about which boxes they check for me (always to their advantage, and against mine), what the terms mean, etc. iow, Why do business with a company that I expect to be dishonest and deceptive?

eg: Amazon, returning an item through one of their drop off center. Why presume that I would rather have the refund stay in my account with Amazon, rather than refund to credit card that I paid with. So I check the box asking for refund to credit card. Later I see that I can more easily go to a different drop off site. Amazon doesn’t let me use the same return label, or simply change the drop off location. It requires me to “cancel” the return. This gives them the opportunity to switch refund back to “leave it with Amazon”. I didn’t notice this switch until their ‘immediate’ refund email happily announced that my refund resides at Amazon. One phone call (ghosted after put on hold), chat session, and another phone call all refused to move the refund back to credit card. I filed a dispute with credit card company.

    • I have been using zelle.  A few times a year.  I picked Zelle because it is immediate, and can operate out of my bank account.  I chose not to use Paypal, Venmo, etc., because I didn’t want to pay a fee to use a credit card, and don’t want money sitting in an account with them to avoid fees for the few times that I use money transfer.  And, it would likely mean transferring money to that account just to be able to send to someone.  Too complicated.

Seems that the article is mentioning money theft based on people falling prey to the usual scam artist tactics. Not money being directly accessed from accounts by thieves.  And the banks not doing as much as possible to protect against it? Probably not. Being money transfer I guess they aren’t liable for it.

However, the article did inspire me to move my Zelle access to a checking account which never has much in it, only enough to pay the imminent credit card, utility, autopays.  Which saved me recently when the only check I had written in last 3 years was stolen and check washed. It was denied because of insufficient funds.  I transfer in whatever will be needed for the next few weeks’  autopayments.

    • I don’t think that I was opted into Paze.  I have not heard of Paze until now. However, I didn’t join Zelle through one of those 3 banks.

    • the item in scam process, “The bank’s call center may be no help.”    is confusing. How does the scammer know the person’s phone number if they called the bank? How will the person confuse the scammer with bank if scammer wasn’t replied to?

MediGap plan and had a question whether I can change back to Medicare Advantage

Having been on Medigap for years before medicaid started covering it… I am VERY biased against so called Medicare “””Advantage””” plans as I feel in the end they are an advantage only to the folks selling them. With Medigap I can go to whatever Dr I want w/o a referral, and everything is covered. Steps off soapbox.

I was on medigap (supplement plan F) for a year before switching to a humana hmo advantage plan.  didn’t make sense to me to spend $150/month (at that time) for the same service, same drs, that I would get in the hmo plan, which cost me nothing ($0/mo).  Been on it for a number of years now. I pay $0 to see primary care,  $10 to see specialist.  Other services are different copays or no charge.  There is an out-of-pocket max, after which HMO pays 100% of covered services.   Medicare, btw covers little 100%. You have to see a dr that participates in medicare, and for most things there is a copay.

The Raw story article sounds a bit hysterical/conspiracy theory to me.  My understanding is that Advantage companies get a flat fee per person covered each year (like a premium in regular insurance). There are plans other than the Advantage HMO plans that cost money to join.  I don’t have one of those plans and pay nothing to the plan each month.

I write my primary care dr if I want a referral, and have never had resistance getting one, and have never had one reversed at a later time.
