      Joe,

Thanks for the definitive reply and link. It seemed so obvious a thing to do that there must be something I am missing. Guess not.

Another Outlook to Google sync program is Outlook Companion: http://www.companionlink.com/outlook/ I am a week through the 14 day trial period, and it works perfectly.

Perhaps the best way to prevent POS issues is to use cash if at all possible. Inconvenient, and you sometimes get odd looks, but I got through years of international travel, and a purchase at Target during the period in question, with no problems. By contrast, I have a credit card used only for on line purchases. It has been compromised, and reissued twice in the past 5 years.

      Fred,

This reminded me of a day one problem I have, so no roll back available. The computer in question is running WIN7 Pro 32 bit. On the Change HomeGroup Settings, it says “This computer belongs to a HomeGroup” followed by a list of check boxes to share libraries, printers, etc. All are unchecked. I can check them and save, but when I go back to the page they are still unchecked, and access is denied from my other computers. The other two computers, also WIN7 Pro 32 bit, allow me to change and save these selections.

I haven’t found exactly this problem, but the most common solution to obscure HomeGroup problems I have found is to create a new Admin account, transfer the settings, and then delete the old account. There are detailed instructions on how to do this, but I am wondering if there is a fix besides brute force?

Answer found. Run the On Screen Keyboard, OSK.EXE. This brings up a full keyboard, including the Insert key.

One thing most people do not do is prioritize the needed security for a site. In the vast majority, you really don’t care. I have about a dozen high security sites, such as brokerages, PayPal, medical, email, etc, with very long, complicated passwords. RoboForm is great for that. The rest, in the hundreds, literally use a username and password which I have been using since 1978. If they were to be compromised, except for annoyance, and perhaps a bit of embarrassment, it just wouldn’t matter.

      jyungton,

I also use Skydrive, but RoboForm does make it difficult to do that automatically due to the individual LICENSE.RFO files on each machine. Using a manual sync program such as SyncToy allows you to do excludes for individual files, but Skydrive is all or nothing. At least so far. It is easy to manually run the synchronization, and even schedule it, but I am still looking for a way to do this fully automatically. Have you done this, and if so, how?

    • Thanks for the tip. I have used junctions for directories, but that should allow me to do what I want with individual files.

    • Yes, but this seems to be something other than a driver. Deleting the device, and the driver, had no effect when the new driver was reinstalled. I have several other devices which use FTDI drivers, and there is no problem with them. On the other machine, I found that any driver I had worked, so long as the above update was not installed.

    • in reply to: Feature showdown: Gmail vs. Outlook.com #1401881

Desktop clients typically offer much more sophisticated filtering, selective aging/purging of old messages, address books, etc than do the current web clients. On the other hand, syncing those features, even if you access the messages themselves by iMAP, usually requires some extra steps. It would be interesting to see an article on the best desktop clients, from a multiple computer/platform standpoint, to use.

I have File History running on my Surface, but I also use Acronis True Image. Every 2-3 years, I have a situation arise such as a bad HD or something I have done which was stupid, that is easily fixed with a full image restore. A few clicks, and time for a cup of coffee, beats a piecemeal system and program restoration.

Actually, the Surface Pro is different. It does not have an Insert key. Perhaps there is a key combination which is equivalent to the Insert key?

    • in reply to: Is your free AV tool a 'resource pig?' #1319826

I have WIN7 Pro running on three machines, all with NAV. They are all fast machines with plenty of memory, so the footprint is not really a factor. Recently, I added the virtual XP engine to run some truly ancient but still useful specialty programs. For those, I installed MSE. One more thing to keep updated. 😉

My NAV subscription will be expiring in a few weeks, and I have been considering switching to MSE as my primary program. However, when you look at “objective” comparisons, MSE is seldom anywhere near the top in comparison with either free or $ versions. Of course those ratings often look like they were produced by random number generators, with a top program in one being near the bottom in another. Still, I find the “hog factor” near the bottom of my criteria.
