    • in reply to: Unbootable recovery disk makes backups useless #1584961

I ran into a similar problem. I use Acronis on my WIN7 32 bit machine. I have tested and used the backup in the past. Recently, I tried the backup disk, and received exactly the same error message. Same with the spare disk, and a new recovery disk made on another machine. The only change I had made was replace the C drive with a SSD. As a test, I hooked up the old mechanical drive, and all worked perfectly. Hmmm. I have the Plus version of Acronis, which allows you to make up recover disk using the BartPE. A bit of a pain considering how much you need to download, but that fixed the SSD problem.

I have used PC Mover, in multiple incarnations, for years. Usually there are one or two things that need tweaking, but normally are due to some odd or unusual factor in my system. I have found that it sometimes moves things which while harmless, are not needed. For instance, I recently ran a utility to gather all my program registration codes. I was amused to find the one for Win XP, which was not one but two generation of machines ago.

    • I have a program, Roboform, which has been working for years, most recently with the original WIN10. After the Anniversary upgrade, I now have exactly the same problem and solution. From talking with their tech support, they are aware of the problem, and are researching it. So it looks like something subtle has changed, either by accident or design, and not documented. You may have the only solution for now.

      Berton,

There are two such users. They report no similar problem, and suggest that I get a Mac. 😉

    • in reply to: Why is the Internet slow and costly in the U.S.? #1524081

“And why would markets be less attractive to competition if a city provides broadband? Opponents of public broadband would argue that cities can always deliver the service at a lower cost.”

No, cities can deliver it at lower price, not cost. The cost is subsidized in some way by the taxpayer. In fact, the actual cost for anything the private sector can also do is never as efficiently delivered. The old shell game.

    • in reply to: Can’t install Win10 Preview on original Surface Pro #1488987

We use the same software. 🙂

I use Acronis True Image for backup software, and it has been known to do odd things, especially to the boot information. I am checking with their forum, just in case.

      Jerry,

I suspected that, and first tried disabling and then uninstalling my existing security software. Same result. I am going to hold off on the clean install for now, but that is the next step. 48 hours and counting since the last reply from MS tech support. 🙂

    • in reply to: Recycle bin linked(?) to DVD burn folder. #1485460

Thanks to all who had suggestions. Fortunately I am OCD about backups, so I “solved” the problem by restoring from a few days ago. No idea how this happened, and I shall be watching carefully in the future whenever I make changes.

    • in reply to: Recycle bin linked(?) to DVD burn folder. #1485181

The directory path ends with “CD Burning” rather than Burn.” The “….CD Burning” directory does not show the Recycle bin. (I have explorer set to show hidden and system files.) Only the stuff which you would normally expect to find there. In this case, just the desktop.ini file which reads the same as yours.

      Bruce,

I can delete everything except the Recycle bin, which Windows recognizes as a protected file.

    • in reply to: Installing Samsung SSD with an ASRock 890GX Extreme4? #1484152

      Paul,

I use Acronis True Image and have bailed myself a few times with a full image restore. I will wait a bit to see whether there is another fix suggested, and if not will go that route. Thanks for the suggestion.

    • in reply to: Taking another look at Microsoft’s Outlook.com #1475136

I use Outlook 2013, but in retirement, it is somewhat overkill. OUTLOOK.COM is tempting, but the one feature missing from the migration tool is the ability to import rules (150+) from the desktop version. I suspect that if I moved everything else I could readily recreate the rules I really need in a few hours spread over a week or so, but I am wondering if there is a way or utility to automate the process?

After nothing for 11 days, the Newsfeed has started working again. I have made no configuration changes.

      Go figure,
