It is always a kick in the stomach to wake up and find another contemporary has passed on. Woody was someone who contributed throughout his life to make the world a better place, and definitely succeeded. I never knew him personally, other than a few emails, but he was someone who always came across as a friend to all.

I reboot/restart anything in the house with a computer in it on a regular basis.

Desktop daily, after my incremental backup, using the “Shut down when backup completed option.”

Router, Android tablet and phone weekly.

Router and Android TV have the power cycled monthly.

It is amazing how often something odd which I had barely noticed gets cleared when I do that.

Looking forward to the rest of the article. I live in a semi-rural environment, though it is rapidly becoming suburban. Until 2006, I had 52k dialup. Over the years, my single available ISP has gone from 1M to 5M to 50M DSL a few years ago. Early this year, they installed fiber to my pole, up to 2G. The price difference is minimal, but so far, I have not been moved to upgrade. The reason is simple. I don’t do anything which would be materially improved, except for the rare uploads which move at a glacial 3G. Of course, multiple simultaneous users, some playing games, would crush 50G, but that is not the case here. However, I like to keep informed, and your article so far has been an excellent source.

    • Nah, the primary sports this year seem to be in competive pandering, beginning with the opening.  As an aging nerd, I am always baffled, not so much that people devote so much of their productive lives on what are by definition games, but that anybody else really cares.

At 75, and frequently the “young kid” in my social group, I find that desktop usage is highly dependent on the whether they were early adopters of the technology.  If they were, they still appreciate the flexibility and control a desktop provides, be it Windows, Mac, of Linux.  If not, they like the relative simplicity of a phone or tablet.  Interestingly, while the techies still use email, Skype, etc, they are perfectly reachable via text messaging services.  The reverse is frequently not the case.  As others have noted, once you hit “US Presidential Age” the number of never adopters increases rapidly, with communications frequently limited to surface mail and landline phones.

I have two Samsung SSD drives with 10% over provisioning.  MiniTool Patrician Wizard show exactly the same amount as unallocated.  One of them is nearly empty, so I changed the amount of OP to 15%.  MiniTool Patrician Wizard now shows the exact 15% as unallocated.  Whether it is a bug or a feature in one program or another, the OP is showing as being reported as unallocated.

I have a lighted Santa from 1948, and several plush lighted window wreaths from the 1950s.  A total of 11 in all.  A few years ago, I replaced the manual switches at the wall sockets with smart plugs.  I am always bemused that I have a combination of technologies spanning most of a century working together.  BTW, the ornaments are on their second wiring rebuild!  I am a little later than you, as I traditionally put them up on Black Friday while I am cowing in my house from the frenzied shopping mobs.  🙂

It looks to be most useful for those odd programs which you use but don’t rate a shortcut, and are used infrequently enough that you have to hunt around a bit for the Start Menu link.  It does bring up URLs with lighning speed compared to opening the browser and then the URL.  Unfortunately it does not seem to support Universal apps gracefully.

    • in reply to: Why not to use Outlook (new) #2599070

I am using the desktop 2019 program.  I gave in to the temptation to try the new version, since it promised to allow me to switch back.  Unfortunately, the new version locked up, preventing me from easily doing that.   A few minutes with my backup program repaired my error of judgement.

    • in reply to: “What can I use my old computers for?” #2526139

My experience exactly.  My Epson 1200U is still working with VueScan on my WIN10 machine, and someone I know has used it with WIN11. It has outlived 4 computers and 3 versions of Windows.  It doesn’t get heavy usage these days, mostly around tax time, but it and VueScan have always been reliable.

    • There are 9 options under the Sync setting.  By incrementally enabling them, I have found that only the Favorites choice causes a problem.  For my usage, a trivial issue.  Something I can check monthly, or after an update, to see if it has fixed itself.  Or perhaps I will stumble over a fix while looking for something else.  Again, thanks all for your patience and input.

Great program.  I have the pro version, and if necessary, will use that.   Knock on wood, it looks like that might not be necessary.

      All,

Progress, and maybe success.  While I was trying to get back to sleep, I decided to uninstall Edge from my phone, then reinstall it.  Of course, I declined the sync option, and Edge worked fine.  Having a fix, I turned syncing back on, and it has been working for 5+ hours using the current vision of Edge.

After I got alejr’s post, it occurred to me that if there is a syncing issue, if it couldn’t sync it wouldn’t crash.  (Not strictly rigorous thinking, but worth a shot.)  I disconnected the cable from the desktop, and sure enough, Edge stayed open.  This allowed me to access the settings at my leisure and turn off syncing. With internet restored, no syncing, things are back to normal, with extensions enabled.

I am going to leave everything as it is for a day or so before turning the desktop syncing back on, or working with the Surface tablet. It is rarely used these days, so even if restoring syncing can’t be done right now, there is no real loss.

There are bits and pieces of suggestions here from several people, and I thank you all for getting me to this place.

      Alan

I had to research that a bit to be certain, but definitely not.  Thanks for the idea, though.

Not yet.  As you know, MS considers it part of Windows, so you cannot use the standard removal method.  It can be removed, at least temporarily using other methods and programs, but I have been holding off on that.  I will try that later today on my secondary computer.
