AskWoody LoungerJanuary 15, 2020 at 2:34 pm in reply to: Apparently Microsoft is still allowing free upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10 #2085407So what does he mean by this? Specifcally what does yeet mean here??
“however careful, do an upgrade keeping everything as if you choose to yeet everything and start fresh, you lose your free upgrade. That old 7 license converts to a 10 digital license and from there you can clean install no problem.”

AskWoody LoungerAKB2000012 How to limit telemetry in Win7/8.8
Thanks! I’ll look into this!
-
amber438
AskWoody LoungerI don’t know if you installed the July security only update which does contain mild telemetry. This mild telemetry is very easy to kill.
Thanks for the compliment for my set up. Stopped gaming a few years ago and it’s my older gaming system and runs like a charm. No win 10 for me yet
althought I should build a rig to play with it.
Yes july security only was installed. I’ll do the updates as suggested. Been out of the field for a while as I retired a few years ago (A+ and network engineer) and never hurts to ask for help. Would you please tell me how to shut down the telemetry for the july security only update?BBIAB
Thanks!

AskWoody LoungerAh good. A home-built rig. You shouldn’t have any issues installing KB3133977. Since you installed Win7 on a 1TB drive, I figure that you didn’t go through the special procedures to install Win7 to use EFI boot.
No EFI boot. Good old cd. I’m truly old school. And in all the years of working on pc’s I STILL hate microsoft updates and, well, you know..:)

AskWoody LoungerKB4490628 installed 8-31-2019
KB4474419 not installed yet dated sept 2019
KB3133977 hidden. thought it had telemetry
So should I proceed with updates?
Ugh I hate windows updates…always have..

AskWoody LoungerHi amber438,
Please see Microsoft’s KB article about KB4512506:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4512506/windows-7-update-kb4512506
About halfway down the page a list of three other updates which you must first install before installing KB4512506.
You must first install the latest Servicing Stack update KB4490628 and then reboot.
Then you need to install the SHA-2 Code Signing update KB4474419 and again reboot.
Finally, you must install KB3133977 which fixes an issue for computers which are using EFI boot for Windows. Before installing KB3133977, please tell us the make and model of your computer, so that we can make sure that you will not experience any issues after installing KB3133977.
Best regards,
–GTP

AskWoody LoungerThank you so much for this! I am redoing my windows 7 this weekend for the last time (bsod ugh) and came here to find out what updates I totally need. I’ve not updated in many, many moons, have a great av and firewall program and don’t feel the need for win 10 at the moment. I have about 5 hard drives and was wondering if I put the updates in a win 7 folder on one of them would that work for updating?
