I agree with Hey Jude on this one. From my experience, Revo does the job in removing ‘leftovers’ especially if you use the advanced settings. I have gone behind it to check it by doing a registry hack and have never encountered any leftovers that were leftover.

    • in reply to: Puzzling backup issue #1241630

Yep, that would explain it, Windows has decided 600 GB of free space is not enough room. It is a 1 TB external. I have had to do a restore using this external, not a test, and it worked fine. Thanks very much for the help.

Agree, floppies and CD’s are just not ideal for primary storage purposes, maybe secondary, backup to the backup. A flash drive would seem the best for your type situation, and they can be overwritten several thousand times with no problem.

Click on the Wireless tab, then Wireless Security beneath that. The key should be listed there.

The free version is only compatible with 32-bit systems, whereas the Pro version is for 32- or 64-bit. It is an excellent program.

Since it’s a laptop, I assume you have onboard sound. I would go to HP’s web site and see if there is a newer driver for your sound device.

    • in reply to: How to upgrade an NVIDIA driver #1210756

Outdated NVIDIA drivers can definitely cause BSOD’s, so you need to periodically check for newer versions.

As far as installing, all I ever do is download the new ones (make sure you get the right ones, correct OS and 32- or 64 bit). I then just install the new ones over the top of the old ones. I don’t get off the internet, disable my security, or uninstall the old ones. You will have to reboot after the install.

The easiest fix is to uninstall it first. Find it in Device Manager, right click, and then choose Uninstall. Reboot, and let Windows reinstall it.

Agree with RussB, 3 to 4 months is generally when hardware problems will surface. Try spinning the fans with your finger while powered down, do any of them seem difficult to turn, especially the CPU fan? PS testers are cheap, you could start there, and if it checks OK, start disconnecting one item at a time as suggested until you find the bad boy.

    • in reply to: laptop cooling pad #1208078

I have read of cases where these coolers cause more harm than good. Your laptop pulls fresh air in one opening and exhausts hot air from another. The vast majority of these coolers are designed to pull hot air away from the bottom of the laptop. If one of the fans, however, is situated over the laptop’s intake, it can prevent the PC from getting enough cooling air, thus overheating. The best thing is to keep the laptop on a hard, smooth surface, elevate it (2-liter Coke caps work well), and use compressed air to blow the dust out on occasion.

    • in reply to: Firefox 3.5.7 and Adblock Plus #1207481

I’m running Adblock Plus 1.1.3 on Firefox 3.5.7 on three PC’s and have not seen nor noticed any compatibility issues. Did your download come directly from the Mozilla web site?

    • in reply to: Desktop photo always “stretched” #1197563

I disagree on resetting the screen resolution. I have three PC’s and none are set to the native resolution. I have them set to my personal preference, and everything, including wallpapers, appears as it should. Two of the PC’s have wide screen monitors, and one is 4:3. Besides, the resolution can always be changed back to the original format if the problem is not solved.

I do agree that if you have an onboard graphics control panel, the settings on that should be checked as well. Getting the proper display to suit your needs can be a little tedious at times.

Since its a new computer, have you tried changing your screen resolution? Control Panel>Personalization>Display>Change Display Settings.

    • in reply to: eSATA causing Windows 7 lockup? #1195995

I have a self-built with Win 7 Pro 64-bit. I didn’t build eSATA into it. When I went to add it, I first tried a dongle, plugging into the mobo. I could not get it to work, the PC would not recognize the ext. HDD. I switched the mobo setting in the BIOS, still no luck. No problem with USB. Finally, I just tossed the dongle and went to a StarTech PCIe eSATA card. No problems since, I leave the ext. HDD connected all the time.

    • in reply to: New Build Confusion #1195078

On the last build I did, I used an Intel mobo which came with a mobo drivers CD. I installed it first, then the OS.

If your mobo doesn’t come with a CD, then I would put in the Windows install disk and let her rip.
