    • in reply to: greyed out folders? #1227534

Thank you very much for your quick reply. It is much appreciated. I checked the option “Don’t show hidden files, folders and drives.” That seems to do the trick. Now, I have to find out if this is caused by Bridge.

    • in reply to: Windows 7–Windows XP Mode and The Print Shop #1210036

Thank you, Rob and Gerald, for responding to my post. I have used The Print Shop in XP machines with no problem. Also, I have used the Print Shop CD label creator. This is a standalone program that works with XP. I’m sure I’ll have to buy the new version of the program.

I can’t seem to install it in Compatibility Mode. By the way, I agree with the comment about the website. All sales but virtually no support.

      Thank you again.

    • in reply to: Do I need a new motherboard? Help! #1185968

First, thank you to BATcher for replying to my post. I am a bit confused as to how to reply; I hope I am doing it correctly. In any case, I got the memory directly from Dell. This is the correct memory for my computer. That is why it is so frustrating. However, at this point I’m happy enough to get the machine working properly. The new memory has been returned to them.

I did not have this problem when I upgraded the memory on the laptop a few months ago.

      Thank ou again.

Excellent! So it would seem that ‘something’ is wrong with one or more of the 1 GB modules, or perhaps all are the wrong speed, or some other internal factor does not match what your motherboard expects. You didn’t say where you got the memory from – I always check on crucial.com for recommended replacements. Maybe run CPU-Z to pull out the characteristics of your current 512 MB memory sticks. Beware that the results are highly techie…! Then you could (hopefully) compare these results with the characteristics of the 1 GB sticks you purchased.

A way to approach whether you have a problem with one or more of the 1 GB sticks is to do a replacement of one working memory stick at a time by one of the larger capacity sticks, and run this new setup for a while (That’s assuming that you can replace just one memory stick, and that your Dell motherboard doesn’t require ‘matched pairs’). Perhaps then boot the previously-suggested Microsoft Memory Diagnostics CD and leave it running overnight? If everything works fine, then you can change another stick and run for a time again — and so on.

It’s pretty tedious. The alternative is to return all the new memory to the source, and start from scratch using CPU-Z and (perhaps) Crucial (or other fine major memory manufacturer!) to get what should be working replacements.

Thank you, everyone. I re-installed the old memory. Everything is fine. No blue screen. Programs that had not installed before now install. Printer drivers were installed.

Now I am wondering—the new memory is the proper size It is the correct memory upgrade as certified by Dell. Why was it causing the BSOD on my machine? Why was it preventing some programs from installing or launching?

If there is anyone who has a guess, please let me know.

Thank you again for your advice.

      Sincerely,

    • in reply to: Mail Merge with address labels (2007) #1143382

Thank you very much for doing this for me. I’m still quite confused because I would not know how to proceed on a step by step basis. I do understand that this can be edited using Excel. Also, I assume that you opened the database in Excel using Open>With. Then you added the priorities. When I used the Excel spreadsheet in Word it listed the priorities as if they would also be printed out. I’d just like to go back to my 2 questions, especially the first:
She would like to put the names of the principal and the two assistant principals at the very beginning. The Recipients List will sort in ascending or descending order. However, is there a way to edit the Recipients List in Word so that it begins with these three names, even if they are not in alphabetical order, and then continue with the rest of the names in proper alphabetical order?
I know that you answered that question but I am confused about the step by step instructions I would have to follow.
Thank you again for taking all this time.
      Alan

I re-saved it as a 2003 database and zipped that. Hope this helps. Thanks again.

I tried zipping it…hope this works. There is no private information on the list. Thanks again

Thank you for responding. I don’t understand the steps you are referring to for adding an extra field. It might be better if I send you a Recipients List that I created. Is it possible for you to show me the changes I must make so that the three administrators are at the top of the list? (You can choose any three names.) Also, my practice list is 324 kb. Is there a way I can send it to you?
The Recipients List was made directly through Word.(Mailings>Select Recipients>Type New List) From what I can see, in order to edit the list to change the month she would have to do this almost one hundred separate times.I am aware that even though this list was made in Word, it can be opened and edited in Access through Find and Replace. However, I do not believe she has Access on her computer. Therefore, she would have to edit it in Word and I do not see a quick way to do it.
      Thank you very much.

    • in reply to: cannot open file (PP2007 Viewer) #1139431

Thank you. She went to the Control Panel, but there is no indication for PP Viewer 2003, even though it is on her computer. I am able to save the file as pps or ppt but cannot send it to her; it is too big. (The original file was sent via YouSendIt. What is perplexing is that other people have had no problem in viewing the slide show. Thank you again. Alan

    • in reply to: cannot open file (PP2007 Viewer) #1139420

Thank you again. She did install the MOCP. However, she still gets the same error message. Do you know of any compatibility problems with regards to Vista? Alan

    • in reply to: cannot open file (PP2007 Viewer) #1139417

Thank you, Hans. As I write this, she is downloading the MOCP. I’m curious as to why you suggested this. Isn’t the PP2007 Viewer for people who don’t have PP at all on their computer? By the way, it seems that she has both the PP2003 and 2007 viewers on her computer. Thank you, again.

Gee, I never knew this. But then, I’ve never had to proof in Italian. Thanks again.

    • in reply to: spell-check and grammar in French and Spanish (2007) #1126327

Thank you very much, Hans. I now have a better understanding. Thank you for taking the time. I do appreciate it. I do understand that one must buy the language pack to do proofing in Italian in Word 2007. Am I correct in assuming that If one has Word 2003 or 2002 the proofing tools are automatically part of Word? I do not recall any extra packs for former versions of Word.
      Thanks again.
      Alan Silberlight
P.S. I am a retired Spanish and French teacher. I have somewhat come out of retirement to teach French. There are many Italian teachers in my department. That is why I need this information. The school has Office 2003. Some of them have 2007 at home.

    • in reply to: spell-check and grammar in French and Spanish (2007) #1126324

Thank you again, Hans. However, I am still confused. At the lower left-hand corner of the screen, when I use Word, it says English. When I click on that word, a box that says language opens up. I am able to select quite a variety of languages. What is the difference between doing that and going to Proofing Tools in the Add/Remove section.? That is the point that I am not understanding, especially since I can select many languages, including Italian.
      Thank you very much
