AskWoody PlusNo idea, but proceed cautiously.

AskWoody PlusSome people come into our lives and quietly go.
Others stay for a while leaving indelible footprints, and we are never ever the same.
Woody Leonhard left footprints on countless lives throughout the world.
In the words of the poets:
“Loss, and Possession, Death and Life are one.
There falls no shadow where there shines no sun.”— Hilaire Belloc (1870—1953)
From “On a Sundial” (Sonnets and Verse, 1938)
Sic itur ad astra.
(‘Thus one journeys to the stars’)
— Virgil (70—19 BCE, from “The Aeneid”)
With heartfelt condolences to Woody’s family and many, many friends.
Rest In Peace, Good Sir — and thank you.

AskWoody PlusIn addition to Avira Free Security, Bitdefender Antivirus Free for Windows is also compatible with Windows 7
https://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.htmlFWIW, here are Neil Rubenking’s takes on free anti-malware at PCMag (updated 17 June 2024):
https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-free-antivirus-protectionMalwarebytes is also compatible with Windows 7, though the free version is on-demand only (there is a 14-day free trial of the Plus version, however). Still, it is useful for a second opinion on a potentially infected system.

Do we even HAVE fines for this sort of thing? Or do we just enrich a class of lawyers in Class Action suits in which we get $3.22 and year’s worth of credit monitoring from the credit reporting firm that was hacked itself as restitution?
Thank you for today’s Trick Question. (Sigh…)

AskWoody PlusMarch 30, 2022 at 6:29 pm in reply to: Canadian Tech: How to rebuild a Win7 system with minimal snooping #2435472Yes, I have been quite pleased with them, as well (I have 0Patch installed on eleven Windows 7 machines that are under my wing), and share your hope that they are able to continue crafting the patches necessary to keep Win 7 safely usable. (There is also an ongoing discussion within the company about the possibility of offering patches for Windows 10 after it goes EOL.)

AskWoody PlusMarch 30, 2022 at 3:08 pm in reply to: Canadian Tech: How to rebuild a Win7 system with minimal snooping #2435429With respect, an updated [final] unified post-EOL procedure for the clean reinstallation of Win 7 would doubtless be extremely useful to (and very much appreciated by) a great many users.
In addition, should it be necessary, a fork in the procedure to allow for successfully incorporating the Microsoft Extended Support Updates (ESU), or those from 0Patch, could also be added.
Cheers,
AJN

AskWoody PlusHello,
By chance, did you also check the file with another antimalware scanner? Given NirSoft’s long and unblemished reputation, there is an excellent chance that WIN Defender kicked out a false positive.
A rather nifty free utility is the PeStudio Initial Malware Assessment Tool (updated today). A portable app, it allows one to run a file through VirusTotal (drag & drop), with additional detections for advanced users:

AskWoody PlusJuly 24, 2021 at 11:50 pm in reply to: Part I – Aren’t these the greatest performances of classical music? #2379752About six decades or so ago, The New York Times published a review of a concert performance of a then-current minimalist composer. It began with this sentence:
“Two things can be said of this man’s works: 1. They are sort; 2. They are not short enough.”

AskWoody PlusJune 29, 2021 at 9:53 pm in reply to: Part I – Aren’t these the greatest performances of classical music? #2374658Indeed.
To call the brothers Jussen extraordinary is an understatement — whether playing together or individually.
To my ears, Arthur takes pride of place with his reading of the late Brahms Intermezzo in A, Op. 118, No. 2 (completed just four years before his passing): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Wo4IPNMzWQ. That he was sixteen years old in this performance is beyond words.
One could literally build the foundation of a basic repertoire of piano music (of the highest caliber) from the recordings the brothers have posted on YouTube.

AskWoody PlusEureka!
Evidently, there seems to be a specific glitch in the “Greatest Music” thread; I shall now try posting my reply again in Slimjet; if the does not work, then Brave, and report back.

AskWoody PlusWell, let’s see what happens in Slimjet with no changes…
