Hi…. I just got an email with the offer of Zone Alarm Pro firewall free (just for today) any comments please as to whether I should grab it before the day is our? Cheers Dave.

My understanding of using ‘free-for-today’ software is that you cannot re-install it at a later date should you want to.

What other security software are you running? It seems to be not much more than a souped-up firewall, and other ‘security suites’ and/or alternative no-strings software may provide just as good protection.

Yeah to what Leif said! Someone here in The Lounge had a re-install problem as Leif mentioned, after a system crash.

In addition, it would probably “only” be a year of freedom – I’d bet that you’d eventually have to pay or remove it. There’s a lot of alternatives out there.

I think you missed it, because I saw posts on another board about it yesterday!

And several people said they had been asked for credit card details although the amount to be charged was £0. Others said they had had no problem…

Thanks guys, I must admit I did not note the date the email popped into my IN box so I realize I was too late but I think I am reasonably well protected seeing I am running the free version of Zone Alarm, have SuperAntispyware & run Spybot S&D frequently.

PC Tools Firewall Plus released a major upgrade September 29. Registration is free, and necessary (they email you the serial number for it to work properly). This version works with XP 32-bit, Vista 32 & 64-bit, and Windows 7 32 & 64-bit. It is available at FIREWALL. I think they make their money on other programs, and the firewall is given away as a promotional item.

Thanks all…. been off line for a while….modem caput…new one supplied today. Bob… to answer your question, I am using Avira AntiVir Personal; Bob, I am currently using Zone Alarm but have just had a look at PC Tools Firewall Plus and wondered if I should revert to it rather than ZA? Is it superior or is it just a matter of personal preference? Regards Dave.

Is there a reason for you wanting to change? I can see no good reason to recommend you change just for the sake of change, and you’ll only have a new learning curve to go through.
