Zone Alarm seems to be blocking my access to another PC running on the LAN.

ZoneAlarm runs on PC1. McAfee runs on PC2.
I have set up ZoneAlarm to trust IP addresses: 192.168.0.101

    With ZoneAlarm OFF
PC1 can ping PC2 and modify shared files on PC2. Works the way I want it to but I

On the computer running ZoneAlarm, have you given “Windows Explorer” permissions to access the network and internet?

Dave, thanks for the postback. To answer your question, yes it is. I just now went back into Zone Alarm and discovered my own problem even after I worked several hours on this too trying all sorts of different things! I was always looking under Firewall / Zones. But under Firewall / Main, the Trusted Security Level was set to “High” which does not permit file sharing. I had to set that to “medium” and the problem was fixed. I knew it had to be something simple I was overlooking. Hope that information helps save the next person hours of debugging! Now I can spend time fixing PC2.

That will do it every time.
          Thanks for posting the fix.

          As for PC 2
Get ride of McAfee, I will not use it.

What anti-virus would you suggest? I was also thinking of Panda Express and Nod32. NAV doesn’t interest me as it seems to take too much control over your PC and I heard it is difficult to uninstall. I haven’t tried turning McAfee totally off, just the firewall. But once I disconnect from the internet I’ll give it a try and see if I can reach shared files on PC1.

I use F-Prot Antivirus for Windows for my AV and ZoneAlarm for my firewall.

Personal license Personal computer US$ 29.00
              Purchase F-Prot Antivirus
The Home User license for F-Prot Antivirus for Windows covers up to 5 computers in the user’s home. Home users with more than 5 computers should purchase a corporate user license.
All prices refer to annual licences that include one year of virus signature file updates, version upgrades and technical support via e-mail.

The current issue of PC World has a review of 10 antivirus programs.

Dave, DenGar, thanks for the information. I will certainly go through the PC World article. When my McAfee expires, I will make a decision. Thanks again for the information.

Avast is lightweight, effective, and free for home use. Highly recommended. I switched to it after evaluating several packages and will never again install Norton or another bloated package on my PCs.
