A couple of days ago (maybe three, I should have counted) YouTube started fielding a new Ad blocker blocker. It had a couple of issues right off the bat; the warning on why the video was not available due to the presence of Ad blocker software in my browser only flashed a second or so. I had to tickle it a couple of times to read most of it, then just a black player screen.

So I switched over to Duck Player in the DuckDuckGo browser, and continued to watch ad-free YouTube videos. I was curious to see how long it would take for my Firefox extensions to catch up. This afternoon, YouTube’s Ad blocker blocker is no longer functional, and no ads on Firefox once more, along with their tracking and privacy intrusions.

      bbearren,

What FireFox addins are you using? I’ve been using DDG Browser to get around things also, but it would be nice to do it directly in FF.

      Thanks!

        bbearren,

What FireFox addins are you using?

        AdBlocker for YouTube
        AdBlocker Ultimate
        AdGuard AdBlocker
        DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials
        FadBlock: Friendly AdBlock for YouTube
        Privacy Badger
        uBlock Origin

And they’re all setup to auto-update. The only ads I ever get exposed to are those that the YouTuber has self-narrated within their content, but most of them keep the Logo of the sponsor on screen, so it’s easy to fast-forward through those.

          bbearren,

That’s a lot of add blockers running at once.

Some catch what others may miss. And a couple are more than just ad blockers. They don’t conflict, and they don’t interfere with my browsing at all.

I just use uBlock Origin and Ghostery – and also Malwarebytes Browser Guard (from the free version).

However, I often have to turn OFF Browser Guard for a specific website where it can cause problems.  Perhaps for no more than half a dozen websites that I use.  My motto is now “if it doesn’t display properly, turn off Browser Guard’s Ads/Trackers protection“, and happiness occurs…

Hasn’t anyone tried Ghostery —- a firefox add-on/extension?   I used to use AdBlock Plus, but the Mountainview crowd got wise to it.  But Ghostery got wiser.  I haven’t seen an ad since I started running it in tandem with ABP.

However, more annoying than ads on YT is the necessity of allowing scripts in order to even watch a video.  I use NoScript —- the most useful firefox add-on of all time.  I used to get by with allowing only the youtube script.  Not anymore.  Now I have to unblock every script that wants inside my browser container:  doubleclick, googlevideo, gstatic and google itself.  If I keep any of those scripts blocked, it either doesn’t play, or stops playing after 60 seconds.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that I do support several YT content creators (Karolina Protsenko and Dovydas to name two) who rely on YT ads to make a living.  When I’m digging into those channels, I will pause Ghostery and ABP so they get credit for their hard work and acknowledge (and enjoy) the value of their entertainment.  I’ll sit through those ads and tolerate them because it’s an issue of fairness, and it’s simply the right thing to do.

When I’m watching YouTube videos on Apple mobile devices, I can usually watch one video on the YouTube website with the DuckDuckGo browser without ad interruption. If I do start seeing ads, playing the YT video on Duck Player in the DuckDuckGo browser works well (no ads). The only downside of the Duck Player, and why I don’t use it as my go-to option, is that I can’t speed up playback with captions, which I often want to do, just to save time, for narrated, non-music videos.

On a Windows PC, for me, watching YT videos on Firefox with the UBlock Origin extension, consistently works with no ads or other glitches no matter how many YT videos I watch… so far.
