Your Car Is Spying on You
    By Jeff Somers  –  April 11, 2024  –  Lifehacker

“If your car is relatively new, it’s been designed as a spying superstar -modern cars typically have microphones, cameras, and tons of sensors collecting data. But it’s not just the sensors built into the car itself – there are also all the apps installed on the car’s interface, plus all the apps installed on your phone, which you probably link to the car via Bluetooth, giving away all sorts of privacy in the process. That means car manufacturers can potentially know the music you listen to, things you say inside the car, and the locations you look up on map apps. We’re firehosing private information to a car maker; we just don’t think about it. In fact, some car manufacturers even admitted to tracking your sexual activity in relation to your car, along with health data.”

This article does have some ideas about what we can do about this unwanted car spying. Maybe we should just stay with really old dumb cars. I like my car with no touch screens and a push button AM FM Cassette radio that does not spy. For those of us that have smartphones, the website  Privacy4Cars  has both Apple and Android Free Apps to “Easily delete your Personal Information from vehicles you drove or connected to. Download the Privacy4Cars App for FREE” Check out their YouTube videos for an interesting education.

The site you linked requires you install an app (that collects personal info) to then provide you with information on how to delete your data from a car. A site that actually cares about your privacy will tell you how to delete data up front, without additional data collection.

      cheers, Paul

The Internet is spying on you
Your PC is spying on you
Your smartphone is spying on you
Video cameras on house doors and streets are spying on you…

So what’s the problem with another spying device ?

To most Americans, cars and trucks are sacred territory.

But they are happy to carry a personal tracker everywhere and post their personal data to sites that sell it without compensation?!

          cheers, Paul

Ignorance is bliss. If we don’t let ourselves find out or think about something morally reprehensible that is being done to us continuously, then we don’t have to care or do anything about it.

This is true unfortunately for a lot of people, but I personally only carry my flip phone when I drive somewhere.  It’s mainly to use for security and emergency and it stays turned completely off until I need to use it.  I also have its global tracking turned off.

I’m just grateful that everything I did in my car as a young man was private then and now. 🙂

Just received an email announcing that, “An Update to your STARLINK In-Vehicle Touchscreen Display is Available!”  The vehicle hosting STARLINK is a Subaru.

According to Subaru. “STARLINK brings multimedia content, smartphone connectivity, seamless navigation, extra safety, and everyday convenience to Subaru vehicles. This suite of on-board technology helps make every drive more entertaining, confident, and enjoyable.”

      The STARLINK package includes:

      • Safety and Security services including Automatic Collision Notification, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Recovery, and the added convenience of Remote Services;
      • Multimedia connects to music, news, navigation, podcasts, etc.; and
      • Wireless Bluetooth pairing and hands-free smartphone operation.

What is missing from the email announcement, and a quick internet search, is information about the update and what it does.
