    Dear Loungers,

Every now and then, when I try to perform some operation such as deleting or renaming one of my folders in Windows Explorer, I get a message from Vista asking if I initiatied the action and if so, that I should select “continue.” When I do, I get the following message, “You Need Permission to Perform this Action,” with a choice between “Retry” and “CAncel.” Retry never works. This hapened, for example, when I was trying to delete a file that was automatically ripped to My Music library after inserting a cd into my drive.

Does anyone know how to get around this error message and change/delete my files and folders?

    Regards,

    JMT

To make long story short, that is how you can change the files ownership in Vista.

      1. Open Command Prompt with elevated Administrator privileges: click Windows logo (Start) in the left lower corner of your screen, then in Search box type CMD (do not hit Enter!); when the CMD appears on the Programs list, right-click it and from pop-up menu choose “Run as Administrator”.

      2. In the black Command prompt window, type the command like following:

      echo y| cacls “Folder/File” /T /G %username%:F

when “Folder/File is the folder or the file you want to edit; for instance,

      echo Y| cacls “C:UsersJMTDocumentsOld document.docx” /T /G %username%:F

Permissions for this folder or file will be reset to the account from which you run the command.

can you change the ENTIRE system to recognize you as the owner or is it always going to have to be done for EACH file that comes up with this error?

“can you change the ENTIRE system to recognize you as the owner or is it always going to have to be done for EACH file that comes up with this error?”
No, and I would NOT want it to.

whisper You have answered ‘No’ to an OR question – which part are you saying No to?

“can you change the ENTIRE system to recognize you as the owner ”
No, you can NOT take ownership of the “ENTIRE system ”

Hope this clears up any question to my answer of No!

Dave, why would you NOT want to take control of your ENTIRE system. I am the only one on my computer so it seems that it would be the logical thing to do????

            • #1123295

That would mean your user account could do absolutely anything to any file on the system. So, if a bad guy could gain control of your account your whole PC would be at risk. If there are files and folders that the ‘system’ owns it is not quite as easy.

Hello, I don’t know what I have done differently but in these last weeks, the problem has disappeared.

              Thank you!

Or you can download the freebie utility, WINBUBBLE link is on the right side about 1/3 down the page. This will give you right click options to take ownership of this filefolder.

It there a pattern to what different folders this is happening?
Remember that “SYSTEM” files and folder should NOT be messed with!
