AskWoody_MVPOctober 16, 2019 at 2:56 pm #1983303Most of the reddit instances seem to be HP machines, and solved by a more recent update via HP Support Assistant.
I updated 20 days ago from Intel DCH display driver version 26.20.100.7158 (not HP) to 26.20.100.7212 and an included fix was for “Minor graphical anomalies may be observed when opening Microsoft Store or Windows 10 start menu.”

GuestOctober 16, 2019 at 4:27 pm #1983507The main driver for all graphics related issues since Windows 10 RTMed back in 2015 is the fact that Microsoft is tweaking the underlying Hyper-V platform Windows is running on to death. While users not running Hyper-V VMs are affected to a lesser extend, users depending on Client Hyper-V get the full horror show (i.e. VMs do not boot, mouse cursor doing the tango, Microsoft Hyper-V graphics driver crash, memory leaks sucking hundreds of MBs a day, enhanced session mode video getting diconnected on boot, restart, and shutdown of VMs, name it). In the end, all Windows 10 users are affected since Hyper-V is part of the operating system and Windows won’t run without. Of course, Microsoft will tell you that Windows 10 is a new OS with rough edges and if you need a stable OS, you should use Windows 7/8.1. The latter EOLs in 2023 so Microsoft is not in a hurry to fix Windows 10 issues.

Isn’t Hyper-V an optional feature which has to be enabled, and not available at all in Home or 32-bit editions?

I can’t imagine that Microsoft have ever said anything like that.

AskWoody LoungerOctober 17, 2019 at 5:51 am #1983722Agreed, Hyper-V is optional and you must enable this function both in PRO and ENTRPRISE. Not sure if it enabled in default on Windows Server. Its solution for those who do not want to use (and pay) for VMware.

GuestOctober 18, 2019 at 4:19 pm #1984295That’s correct. ‘Hyper-V Host Compute Service’ and other hypervisor related services are installed on Windows 10 Home as well. Although not enabled, those services are part of the OS.

AskWoody MVPOctober 16, 2019 at 6:13 pm #1983586I got that update 10/8/19, no issues of any kind.ย My Intel driver is version 20.19.15.4531.

AskWoody PlusOctober 21, 2019 at 5:49 pm #1986955My Lenovo Yoga laptop has died, thanks to these fixes from Microsoft. The screen now rarely and rapidly flashes up and then disappears. I’m going to see if a USB-C to DP cable (not yet obtained) will allow me to connect a separate monitor. Has anyone else had this problem and solved it?
A bit of history. The Start Menu started popping up all by itself. I uninstalled the fix that was supposed to trigger that (at least, I thought I did) but the problem didn’t go away. So I reinstalled the fix. Then I decided to go through the ‘Fresh Start’ option which worked nicely. Then more fixed came from MS and I foolishly allowed them through and now my laptop is, as described above, almost bricked. Thankyou Microsoft.

I hope you have at least managed to check that this isn’t a hardware problem that just happens to coincide with the software issues…?
(Firmware / BIOS setup screen working would at least mean the display panel is alive, and further hardware testing should be possible by booting from a live-USB or some such…?)

Thankyou for the suggestion, I will indeed attempt it if my USB -> DP cable doesn’t solve the problem.

To check that the hardware works download a Linux Live image, write it to a USB and boot from that.
Can you roll back to a point previous to the issues (press F8 as Windows is starting)?
Do you have a backup you can return to?cheers, Paul

Thanks Paul. I’m wondering if by dreadful coincidence it may be a hardware problem as I cannot even see the BIOS screen.

AskWoody_MVPOctober 24, 2019 at 12:15 pm #1990565unrelated but MS has just released the optional non-security update for 1903 today Oct. 24 – KB4522355 (build 18362.449)
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4522355/windows-10-update-kb4522355
also Intel DCH Graphics driver version 26.20.100.7323 is available from Intel’s web site (adds 1909 support; may also work with older Win10 versions from 1709 to 1903) ๐

GuestOctober 29, 2019 at 3:11 pm #1994957I’m a one-man IT department for a museum. We have a classroom, and we recently purchased 40 Dell Latitude 5590’s for school tours and guests to use. Got through two months of updates without a hitch. Then KB4517389 hit and random units are black screening upon boot – they are running, but only pure white graphics show at all (Dell logo for example), and only as a barely visible less-black graphic. Not usable at all. Digging through old cables for a VGA to find if the outboard works, so I can remove the KB update and/or update the driver. I noted that those that did not “glitch” are swallowing KB4522355, the follow up cumulative, and seem ok. Looking in the installed updates, Microsoft installed the Intel 24.20.100.6286 lang with the second September update. Thanks Woody and everyone who contributes here for some suggestions.

GuestOctober 29, 2019 at 3:38 pm #1994971Follow-up on the previous post. An outboard monitor works. Intel graphics panel and Windows Display can’t even detect the display panel. The Intel 26.20.100.7157 driver is as high a release as I could get for a download directly from the Intel site as linked above. Windows pops up a dialog stating “The driver being installed is not validated for this computer.” If I click Yes to the question “Would you like more information?” it sends me to Intel. “Get the driver from the manufacturer.” Dell says the driver I have is all they have. Looks like the beginnings of a old-fashioned Win98-style loop…

There are three more recent than that available from the link two posts above your first:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/29113/Intel-Graphics-Windows-10-DCH-Drivers
Windows pops up a dialog stating โThe driver being installed is not validated for this computer.โ If I click Yes to the question โWould you like more information?โ it sends me to Intel. โGet the driver from the manufacturer.โ Dell says the driver I have is all they have.
If you want to overcome that, you have to download the .zip, not .exe, version of the driver and install manually via Device Manager:
Error Message: Computer Manufacturer Graphics Driver Detected
How to Get Zip File Version of Intelยฎ Graphics Driver
Install an Intelยฎ Graphics Driver in Windowsยฎ 10 and Windows 8*/8.1*
I’ve done this many times and it’s not too painful and always successful.

GuestOctober 30, 2019 at 5:25 pm #1995789I used all the above suggestions – uninstalled the update, manually installed the new driver, even a swing at system restore. Nothing. I hit the reset and let windows wipe and reinstall itself. Video came back on when it was about 40% done. Finished it, and set that one aside – not going to try any updates until after the November Crash Tuesday.
