Just recently got the dreaded blue screen and a corrupted hive file message. Unfortunately I had no handy hints with me at the time and no access to the web so I started tweaking. To cut to the chase I have 3 operating systems now!

    One hangs completely,
The second one resets first time round then starts sometimes in administrator mode.
The third gives me the 0x80070002 error which cites a license checking issue and sometimes it hangs after a flash of blue screen. On two occasions it started spontaneously in administrator mode

I thought I had found the solution on the KB http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…kb;en-us;310794%5B/url%5D but I do not have the registry keys they mention.

The whole thing is in a mess and although I haven’t lost any data and I’m on at the moment I can’t guarantee restarting after I close down again or have to do a reboot.

I cannot check for viruses either as I cannot get AVG to work anymore.

Does anyone have any advice as to how to get out of this (without doing a complete reformat hopefully)?

      Thanks for the reply

      Yup
Tried these things too (forgot to mention it) but I have no valid restore points (I was surprised too – I don’t know why as I have been running XP for about 2 months now).

The first time I managed to get up and running after the first debacle I went straight to the restore prog and made a new restore point (as I thought) but it still would not work when I tried it.

The trouble is I’ve tried so many things (I have a sheaf of KB articles to hand) that I tend to forget what I did at any one time scratch.

I’m a bit gung ho in that respect. doh

I searched for the keys and I found “cryptography” in the appropriate paths but underneath are 3 branches which do not even mention the word “providers”. I felt like the bomb disposal man faced with the red, green & blue wires – which do I cut? flee I decided (contrary to my nature ) to avoid the issue (perhaps it will go away). “Cryptography” can be found in other places but I feel even less inclined to touch these.

As far as the services go I have the same set up as demonstrated -i.e. already on auto. However I’ll try the boot later and get back to you (if I can! )

Well we’re making some progress. I did not touch the registry but I was able to restart this time (hands free) and it went straight to the administrator mode.

I re-installed and updated the antivirus which works now and tells me I’m free. I’ve also placed the the recovery console on the start menu. I made a new restore point

All of my settings seem to be normal when I go into my own account.

Only thing is – am I sitting on top of a time bomb? yikes

Should I try to clean up, leave well alone or what would you suggest to try next?
