I need to upgrade 25 computers in my office. Most are running Win98, some 98SE, and 2 are on NT Workstation 4.0. We are on a Novell network and use Outlook for email. Should I wait for XP or upgrade to 2000 now? I hate the idea of getting a 1.0 version of an OS in my corporate environment.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 20, 2001 at 3:16 pm #538136no exchange server? that makes it a little easier – but outlook has so many improvements that it’s hard to recommend 2000 over xp.
anwhy not get a demo of office xp and try it for yourself? see if you need the new features.. then decide. the demo versions need activated and only work on one computer – for 25 you shoud get a volume license and avoid activation.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 20, 2001 at 3:28 pm #538143Thanks for the information. Can you tell me more about getting the demo version? You mean get the current beta? And I could get a volume license for the beta?! Amazing. Do I just contact MSoft for more info?
I have an NT Server 4.0, but I’ll probably upgrade that next year. It’s just a file and Internet app server. We access our Exchange Server via our larger City network. Not planning to touch that, though I do need to be able to network with it.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 20, 2001 at 3:36 pm #538145if you are conecting with exchange sever and use a second mail account, you might like outlook 2002 better. however – if it’s exchange 2000, you can get free upgrades of outlook 2002. (ask the admin)
http://www.microsoft.com/office/evaluation/default.htm it’s the final code, not beta but can’t be upgraded using VL.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 20, 2001 at 3:50 pm #538149I checked out the web page, and it seems to say that only peer-to-peer networking is enabled. All my computers run on a Novell network, and I don’t have an “extra” I can use just for testing. It doesn’t sound like the Preview program download option would work for me. Am I interpreting the Preview program features/limitations correctly?

AskWoody_MVPAugust 20, 2001 at 8:52 pm #538218You would need the Pro version, as far as I know it is a choice when you sign up for it.
I cut this from a sub page at the MS page that I listed above.
===============================================
For networking:Network adapter appropriate for the type of local-area, wide-area, wireless, or home network you wish to connect to, and access to an appropriate network infrastructure; access to third-party networks may require additional charges
===============================================
I have been testing using a P2P network, but the wizard always defaults to a Domain type of settings. I would also check with Novell for any info that they can give you about using Windows XP Pro with your network..DaveA I am so far behind, I think I am First
