XP on a Mac? (with bootcamp) (SP 2)

Hi all,

Has anyone out there set up a Mac to run Win XP using bootcamp? I’m considering trying this, but I want to see if there’s anything to be learned from those who have gone before…thanks.

I don’t know about your somewhat blanket statement. We DO have a few Mac users who are regulars here in The Lounge and might very well be able to give a bit of advice, so I wouldn’t scare him/her away. Your links are good ones and there’s also this: Apple Introduces Boot Camp.

However, since the question really involves third-party software and not Windows XP, I think I’ll move this thread to the Software Forum to see if one of our Mac users has anything to say about Boot Camp.

Thanks for the links kaplinb– the second one has some very useful information about problems (and solutions) about extended desktops on a Macbook Pro and a Cinema HD display– the exact setup I was considering.

Sorry if this post was a little out-of-scope– this forum is so good it was just the first place I thought to go.

Hi Arianna

I am not running XP on my iMac but I am planning to try it perhaps as early as January when I get my Mac laptop! My son-in-law says that if you want to run only Mac O/S and then shut down and then switch to Windows XP, Bootcamp is the way to go. If you want to be able to delve into both of the systems and have them running “side by side” Parallels Desktop is a better choice.

The positive about Bootcamp is by running only one O/S or the other, you’ll have more power than if you run two O/Ss side by side using Parallels. Now – after my son-in-law told me this – he also told me he is using Parallels, he doesn’t see much of a slowdown in speed and that he likes using Parallels very much. What I plan on doing is using Bootcamp because I have specific uses for Mac and Win XP so I won’t mind having to reboot when necessary!

Don’t know if this is helpful but maybe it is a start!

I am running Widows 7 on my iMac using Parallels. Both OS offer their own unique advantages. I prefer Windows for mail (Incredimail) and Photo storage and viewing (Infanview), and the Leopard Snow for most everything else. I don’t much like IE and use ‘Flock’ which is a Firefox type browser. I do find that running both systems at the same time does slow the machine down. I am upgrading my Ram from 2 to 4 Gigs and expect that will solve that problem. To me, this is the best of two worlds.
