Browsing Tucows today and came across this program which allows to change Windows XP Product Key,Owner and Registered Organization.

Under what circumstances would this be useful?

For example, if you or your company changes your/its name, you might want to see the correct information on Control Panel -> System.

All the program does, presumably, is to automate the two changes you would make using REGEDIT

Yes, I can see that, but the Product Key? Wouldn’t this render the copy of windows invalid?

Yes, that might be possible (I don’t know), but it does seem a long way round. AFAIK, the install media (CD) has no way of ‘knowing’ the key. As an example, we can install Windows from a slipstreamed CD, as long as we use a unique key (not used on any other computer). This will only be checked when we activate Windows.

One case it could prove useful is if you have a valid windows key but no install media and want to to a clean reinstall. You could borrow someone’s install media, install using thier key and then change it to yours.

Ty, Jerry. Now that could be usefull. I kinda thot that’s what it did, but it seemed too good to be true.
