XP and McAfee 6.0

I have 5 user accounts in my XP home setup, mine has administrator rights, all the others are restricted. I installed McAfee antivirus 6.0 on my account, but it seems to cause problems on all the other accounts (Dat files aren’t up to date, and cannot be updated) yet on my account it works perfectly.

Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I’ll reply to my own message after trying dozens of things to try to fix this, all my problems on XP went away when I ditched McAfee. Now I guess I have to get Norton, unless there’s another choice that works and plays well with XP

Why not give F-Prot a try. I have heard good things about it with XP. I had to give up McAfee when I switched to Win2K. F-Prot can be found here http://www.complex.is/cgi-bin/home_pager

I didn’t spend much time looking to reconfigure my brower to suit the needs of McAfee, and I guess I was a little less than impressed with the “dumbed down” interface in version 6.0 that didn’t seem to offer much at all in the way of configuration tools. Maybe it’s worth another try, however.

I ALWAYS get an RULaunch error when McAfee 6.0 tries to check automatically for updates. I had to disable the Firewall software and uninstall it – using BlackIce Defender – a patched XP version instead – and the McAfee box states BUILT FOR WINDOWS XP. This is built for XP like the Detroit Lions play a football game…IT SUCKS! I will be doing some MAJOR complaining to McAfee about their product.

Beware of the “XP Compatible” claims. I purchased Panda AV Titanium after reading rave reviews. It worked fine under W2K, and Panda claimed it would do so under XP Pro. Despite using the latest versions, I continue to get random e-mail transmission failures in Outlook 2002 due to offending Panda background checking file. I have to disable fulltime AV checking (the whole point of the purchase!) in order to send and receive e-mail.

If you need a nudge, note that McAfee has decided to freely allow goverment spyware to bypass their so-called security software. Hello? Isn’t it a matter of time until some enterprising hacker figures out how to use this GAPING hole to their advantage?

AVG is a decent Vscanner – all the more so since it’s free. It updated to take care of I-Worm/Badtrans on 27th Nov. It works on both Win 2k and XP. My NAV only worked on 2k – and as I’d only just upgraded to it, I wasn’t about to pay for NAV2002 as well.

This isn’t as free as you make it out to be – you have to 1) prove you are a school or a non-profit organization and 2) complete the free download before Nov 30 – tomorrow. I just use Blackice Defender (the patched XP version) in place of McAfee Firewall, and I only have problems with the RULaunch portion of Mcafee. I still have to do my virus updates manually.

Let me put this as clearly as I can : AVG, which I have been using and recommending for longer than I care to remember, was downloaded on to my system, and upgraded with the patch file to make it compatible with XP. Although you are required to register, I supplied no ‘proof’ of who I said I was, paid no cash, and yet get free automatic updates. The Badtrans virus was the last, a day after the latest variant was found in the wild.

I just wonder what part of ‘free’ I am not making clear. It is standard practice for firms to make a ‘light’ version of their software free to non-commercial enterprises, and the full blown program for businesses to buy. This is true of AVG, Zone Alarm, InoculateIt and many, many others. Suits me just fine.

The AVG offer DOES NOT expire tomorrow, nor do you have to prove you’re a school etc. You are mixing it up with the AVG Donation Offer : a totally different thing. My URL did not send you there.

Nevertheless, no-one is twisting your arm. If you don’t want it, don’t get it. The same goes for Zone Alarm: testing has shown it blocks more inward and outward attempts than Black Ice (which costs) and McAfee, in the efficiency charts is very close to rock-bottom. With your defensive weapons, I just hope you’re running OE in Restricted Zone, and have your IE settings carefully thought out.

Hi Kev : sorry to have been quite so ‘thorough’ in countering your objection, but I took exception to your suggestion that what I was recommending was in some way unresearched. Naturally, had this been accurate, or had your opinion been about the same thing I was talking about , you’d be quite entitled to your say.
