Windows only: Previously mentioned Microsoft Outlook plug-in Xobni (pronounced “zob-nee”) is now available to the public for immediate download. Previously in invite-only beta, Xobni adds email analytics, better contact cards, fast search, threaded conversations, and more to your Outlook inbox. The NY Times explains one way Xobni makes your inbox more of a social network of connected contacts:

“Xobni recognizes that if an executive sends a copy to someone else on each message he or she sends, it might be to an assistant or another colleague. When someone using Xobni searches for that executive in Outlook, the second person is listed as well.”

The video looks really cool, but as I grow older I’m more reluctant to install new stuff. Has anyone tried it?

I installed it on May 7th. Running Vista Business SP-1 & Outlook 2007 SP-1. Been running without a problem. Produces some good information. Does not seem to negatively impact Outlook or my system.

        Joe,
I looked at that last night and am really tempted to give it a test run. what precludes me from doing so is the problems they are having with Active sync however. since you have it installed, I do have a question that was not addressed in their FAQ’s and that is: I use and have the To-Do bar showing. To me it looks like Xobni is on top of that at all times, or am I mistaken in that it only shows up there when I click on an e-mail?

On my system Xobni is between the preview pane and the to-do bar. Xobni does NOT hide anything.

I’ve since uninstalled Xobni. Sometime late June I think. I forgot to post when I did it and now I’ve forgotten the exact date. I only used it at work. I just did not have enough e-mail from different people and could not see a big benefit to it. I already know who sends me the most e-mail and Outlook is easy enough to use as is to get in touch when I need to.

        Joe,

I’ve used Xobni for a week and, not finding a real good use for it, uninstalled it yesterday. I just couldn’t post back in proper time. Thank you for your report!

Tried it and uninstalled it. Although a nice idea it is obviously intended for a specific user group. My personal use of Outlook is quite simple and this addon doesn’t have much of anything that would improve things for me.
