I think this might be a new version.
Xnview 1.68 is now available for download.

Forgot to mention it’s ware – similar to IrfanView. I find the two compliment each other quite nicely.

Good point. Rumour has it that whilst their relationship appears to be overtly cordial, there are apparently deep and bitter resentments festering below the surface. XnView is forever denigrating IView behind its back and it’s said that it was IView that started the rumour that XnView carried malicious code. Apparently this vendetta began many releases ago and has been passed down from version to version. So, as you rightly point out, don’t give the compliments too much credibility and beware of what lurks beneath those demure, exterior veneers.

Since I’m graphically challenged, could you tell me what use one would make of XnView? i.e. What would XnView do that Irfanview wouldn’t? (I just recently discovered that Irfanview did daptures.

I can’t reel off a definitive list, but in my experience and that of some other users, XnView was better at dealing with large collections of graphics (generating thumbnails etc.) IrfanView used to choke on my system. Mind you, I have heard the reverse comment from still other users – that XnView was the one that choked. I’ve also found that XnView contained graphic filters for file formats not covered by IView, and vice versa. That’s why I consider that the two compli complement each other. I also find XnView to be a bit more intuitive with its interface and commands – things like the screen capture feature are easier to find. I’m still finding out things I didn’t know existed in IView, from other user’s posts.

I guess it’s largely a matter of taste, since the majority of the functionalities seem to be duplicated in both programs. Considering XnView can be whittled down to about a 1MB self-contained folder (if you get rid of the language modules and possibly the skins) I consider it’s a worthwhile utility just to “have”.

Thanks for this information. Since I still don’t use most of what IrfanView can do & rarely use graphics other than posting to the Lounge, for now I’ll just put it on my evergrowing list of things To Do. But I appreciate the info.
