X64 Downgrade – is it a waste?

I inherited a Dell Precision M4300, running Intel Core2 Duo CPU T7800 at 2.60GHz

It came with Windows XP Pro x64.

There are some limitations, for example, I cannot connect iPhone to it, and iTunes is not recognizing the CDDVD burner.

If I load Windows XP, (32 bit) will I be wasting 64 bit architecture? Will it run slower?

I use this mainly for Internet and games like WoW (Warcraft).

All recent computer processors are 64 bit architecture. They will run both 32 and 64 bit operating systems. You will not be “wasting” anything. It will probably not run any slower (or faster, for that matter).

The main concern will be the availability of 32 bit drivers for devices on that particular computer. I suggest you check the Dell site for availability.

According to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page for M4300 there are drivers for 32-bit XP. You should enter the specific service tag to make sure that you are presented with the correct drivers. Then make sure you download all of them and burn a CD/DVD before starting the install.

Going from 64-bit XP to 32-bit XP will require a clean install. There is no upgrade/downgrade path.

Major differences in 32 and 64 bit architectures are in the math processors – specifically the floating point math co-processors. Some difference in picking up more bytes at a time for storage to register ops.

Only noticeable difference would be in very big number crunching
