Hi all. It was recently suggested to me by a bronze lounger that I download the freeby at http://www.regcure.com[/url%5D and perform a full scan which I did BUT of the 1300 + problems it claimed were lurking in the registry, it would only delete 4. To clean the rest required a code from them which would cost $29. I thought there had to be a catch somewhere. Is there really any download out there that will clean out the registry for free? If not? Could someone recommend a program that will not cost me the earth, oh and by the way, I prefer it to be available in the UK where I can purchase if for cash seeing I hate the very thought of divulging personal details over the web. Despite the fact that millions do so every day but also many have their identity stolen every day too. Thank you Dave.

Registry cleaners aren’t really necessary. In older versions of Windows, there was a limit to the size of the registry, so it could be useful to clean out unused entries. In Windows XP, the registry has no (practical) size limit, so the need for a cleaner has vanished.

However, if you’d like to try one, CCleaner is dependable and completely free; it’s used by many Loungers. If you download the “slim” version from CCleaner – Builds you won’t get prompted to install additional software.

Hi Hans. I did a free scan with RegCure – which was recommended by a friend – and as the report shows, there are said to be 1376 problems. Please see attachment.
I have come across other free downloads in the past which are said to scan various innards of one’s computer only to discover when reading another forum thread that
it is just a ploy to get people to send a fee in exchange for a password which is said will erase the problems, when in fact the so called problems don’t exist. I will heed your advice and download the “slim” version and see what it achieves. Before I do, I think it prudent to wait for your reply to this post and maybe you can enlighten me further. Does it function like Spybot by exposing problems which then have to be deleted by clicking on the appropriate tab or does it do this automatic. Sorry for appearing so vague. Regards Dave.

SORRY also for repeating myself somewhat, I should have re-read the original post. Dave.

        • #1084796

I have no experience with RegCure.

CCleaner has a section that lets you clean up files (temporary files, log files, etc.) and a section that lets you clean the registry. Both sections let you scan/analyze first, then you decide whether you want to perform the cleanup or not. With the registry cleanup, you can let CClean fix all, or only the ones you specify. You can make a backup of the registry entries to be removed, so that you can restore the old situation if something goes wrong.

If you look around on other forums a lot quote that RegCure is a scam. Check by doing the following searches in Google:

          “RegCure scam”

          “RegCure spyware”

It is reported that this service has dropped malicious code onto a PC. Whatever you do, do NOT install this software, you will open a world of pain.

I believe he already has Jerry.

Hi Guys, what I thought was a simple question seems to have stirred up a little hornets nest so to speak with various views as to what (if any) is the way forward regarding the registry. First the shop owner whom I purchased the computer from said “There is no need to dabble with the registry” especially if one is a novice, then others make other conflicting comments. He further went on to say he simply uses a program called “Scan & Repair” which is all that’s needed. So I think the order of the day is CAUTION. As for Jerry’s final word on the matter I hasten to add that -as one of the the screen shots shows- I had already done a scan with it but immediately un-installed it and ran Spybot which thankfully reported there were – thankfully- no threats discovered. I have just done a Google search for RegCure and the results are to say the least scary with the first three hits reading like something from a horror comic. In contrast, I Googled RegScan, com and the results are to say the least very confusing to a novice like me. One find has the comment “5 Star Rated” whilst another says in effect do not touch it with a barge pole. Apart from the ones recommended I would appreciate it if you gentlemen would Google RegScan and enlighten me as to which one/s are Kosher. Thanks again sincerely. Dave.

              Hi Dave

Sorry if I scared the socks off you, it is I have learnt from the world of hard knocks and seen it happen so many times with friends and family. It happens to the best of us.

I have been around the Lounge for 6 years or so no (gosh , has it been that long) and if there is one thing I have noted during that time and that is I trust the comments made by a lot of the ladies and gentleman here. I certainly never trust the comments of the young shaver in the PC Shop who have little or no experience in the real world of industry and are looking to sell you something that you do not necessarily want or need.

I would have a look through the Spyware/Antivirus/Safe Computing Forum at your leisure and you will note recurring themes from the Loungers that are tried and trusted applications, one mentioned in this thread – CCleaner is one of those and your recent acquisition of S & D is putting you well on the way for good detection. I would also take note that you will definitely need a good firewall, which will protect you and reduce the need for detection. A lot of the Loungers have got some good experiences, we all have different views, neither wrong nor right.

I’m not sure who recommended RegScan. I believe the only products recommended in this thread were CCleaner and RegSeeker. However, I only skimmed it quickly.

Added: In addition to Googling, it can be a good idea to search in the Lounge. E.g., Registry Mechanic vs Reg Cure

            • #1084837

I have never had problems with RegSeeker, the other product mentioned by me earlier in the thread.

            • #1084842

Sorry John, missed that, I will update my post.

Hello again, what increasingly puzzles me is how one package is the best thing since sliced bread yet someone else waves a red flag at the mention of it’s name also, why are some free when others are quite costly. As I said earlier, I searched on Google and was left totally bewildered after seeing one set of experts giving 100% marks to RegCure when just next to it another gives it a bad write up. Just to clarify a valid point made by Jerry that many salesmen try to sell you stuff that is unnecessary, I totally agree BUT the shop owner I deal with is truly an exception & is in a league of his own in that he has – believe it or not – given me certain service and stuff for free and is always ready and willing to offer advice if I have a question. So where does that leave me at the end of this thread? Answer! With lots of reading to do and tread carefully in this field of mines planted by nutters and a host of software producers looking over the fence hailing the superiority of their wares over all their competitors. Thanks for all your input to this thread fellow loungers, till I turn the next corner and am confronted with another hurled. I have just Googled RegCure and these are some of the comments. PS; I have just stumbled on the following web site:
              Spyware Warrior: Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm%5B/url%5D
which I think many of your novice readers like myself will find most helpful. Lots of software to avoid like the plague and at the end of the article, those that can be trusted like AVG & SpyBot. etc. Dave.

            • #1084923

That is a useful link. It is mentioned in KenK’s Star Post Anti Adware, Spyware, Hijack and in Dengar’s Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware.

              Dave,
You might want to take a look at this thread to get an introduction to the basic and most trusted free tools available to protect your system from most of the unwanted junk while you roam the internet. One other, not mentioned in the thread is SpywareBlaster. You can, and should, install all these programs as they do not conflict with one another and offer several different layers of protection. But you must make a choice when it comes to firewalls and antivirus programs. They don’t work and play well together.

A good firewall and one (but only one) of the free Antivirus programs like AVG or Avast and you should feel very safe and secure. The only program I would recommend beyond these is not free, but is perhaps the best of the bunch. IMHO. Take a look at SpySweeper. HTH smile

            • #1085073

Thanks Doc. I appreciate every post you guys take the time to write. I have AVG, SpyBot & Zone Alarm and now have just downloaded SpywareBlaster. How does that appear to you as a panoply of defense against the multitude of threats lurking ready to pounce on every surfing expedition? Regards. Dave.

            • #1085074

Sounds like you’ve gotten a solid base. Keep them updated and run each one weekly. SpywareBlaster only needs to be updated and then enable the new protections (it protects quietly in the background and doesn’t do scans). I’d recommend getting AdAware to compliment Spybot. It will pickup things that Spybot misses and Spybot will identify things that AdAware misses.

If you get a little extra money for the holidays, you might want to pickup Spy Sweeper as a stand alone (you don’t need the AV and firewall).

            • #1084983

I think you may be confusing RegCure ( a Registry Cleaner ) with Spybot S&D ( a malware cleaner )
Two much different animals, so to speak.

              From your post:________________________________________
I had already done a scan with it but immediately un-installed it and ran Spybot which thankfully reported there were – thankfully- no threats discovered
              ————————————————————————————

            • #1085027

Hi Bob, the reason I ran Spybot was because I had allowed RegCure to scan my computer & Jerry had said on NO account download it so to be on the safe side I thought I would run a check with Spybot. Haven’t a clue if it was necessary but I knew it would do no harm and as it was, the results showed there were no problems. I did (for the benefit of Hans,) run CCleaner-Builds and requested it to clean things up and as things seem to be running normal I suppose nothing but good must have been accomplished. Thanks to all who offered advice. Dave.

      • #1084786

I don’t completely agree with registry cleaners not being necessary, Hans. Registries can contain obsolete and invalid entries, and since the registry is read in at startup, these references can slow the boot process, and load resources which are never called. Ordinarily obsolete and unused entries are few, but in cases where users load and unload software frequently, or a machine has been passed between multiple users without reimaging, a registry cleaner can make an obvious difference.

A recent case in point was the Bride’s “new” XP work machine, which she inherited from a couple of university professors who loaded all kinds of stuff on it. The IS team didn’t reimage the system, they merely removed the unneeded software through Add/Remove, but didn’t otherwise clean the system. Using free Hoverdesk Regseeker (recently disinterred from defunct status) I removed over 2,000 unused and invalid registry entries, which resulted in a faster boot, and a generally faster machine including better task switching, which was a significant issue for her.

        As is usual, YMMV. grin

And I hope that Bronze Lounger is reading all of this!

    • #1084833

I’ve used jv16 Power Tools for some time and have never had a problem. It will: “Automatically clean your Windows registry from obsolete and unneeded data. Automatically fix many kinds of registry errors, such as broken file references. Easily uninstall leftover traces of software you have thought you have already uninstalled ages ago. Detect and remove unneeded history data and MRU (most recently used) lists that can contain sensitive information about you. Locate and delete unneeded files, including temp files and duplicate files.” 21 tools are included, and backup is provided for all the tools’ actions. Not free, though–$29.95.
