I have a contact whose email address I have changed. When I try to send an email, I type in the first 3 characters of her surname and it only finds the old address that I deleted months ago. The same happens if i find an existing email and select “Forward”. Where could this deleted address be coming from? – I have searched the only distribution list that she is on and that’s now got the new address.

Another problem I have is that if I try to forward an email that I have previously sent to a distribution list, it says “Message will be sent from account .” – in other words it selects a blank account, appears to send the email but doesn’t. Has anyone else met this behaviour?
If I got to “accounts” I can select the correct account, but it should automatically use the account from the original email.

Thanks for all your previous help.

The old e-mail address is probably stored in your nickname list. Try the following: when Outlook suggests the incorrect e-mail address, select it with the mouse then press the Delete key. This should remove the entry from your nickname list.

(The nickname list is stored in a file named .nk2 in C:Documents and SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook. Application Data is a hidden folder, so you must display hidden files and folders in order to see it. If nothing else helps, you can delete this file; this will remove *all* nicknames. Outlook will create it anew.)

I’m afraid I don’t have a solution for your second question.

        Thanks Hans.
Deleting the wrong address didn’t work, so I renamed the outlook.nk2 file and the wrong address problem has gone away.
        Many thanks,
        Judith

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable – see Help 19)

I have more information on the Forwarding problem.
          a) It only seems to be on mail that I have sent. Received mail gets forwarded OK.
I found this reference on http://www.communigate.com/MAPI/problems.html%5B/url%5D
“Outlook 2002: this message will be sent via. —— When sending messages, Outlook 2002 does not show the name of the Account it will use to send them. No workaround needed, it does not affect the functionality”
          It sounds like my problem.
After reading this comment I tried forwarding a sent email to my other account. The message appeared but the mail still went through.
So it sound like it isn’t a problem at all. However, I am still suspicious because I sent out an email in February to which no-one replied and several friends told me they didn’t receive. I guess I just keep careful watch to see if it happens again.
Thanks for solving my first problem. Your support is great.

Ah, you’re using the CommuniGate Pro MAPI Connector? You hadn’t told us…

I am having nightmares with this nickname thing! But thank you so much for at least pointing me to the source of the problem. I’ve renamed the file also, and the problem went away.

But then, a short while later I created a brand new wrong address for someone and now I wonder – – do I have to delete this whole file and start over every time it gets an error in it that needs to be fixed? I have many many times right-clicked on addresses in the “to” line and changed the address in the “properties” box that comes up. Sometimes it takes, and often it doesn’t. This baffles me.

There are also some names – including my partner – that it will not remember. Sometimes it is there when I start typing, but more often it isn’t.

But the important issue to solve, is the first one: whether there is any way to correct wrong information in that file without deleting the whole thing. I tried mousing over the wrong address and deleting it, as Hans suggested, but it didn’t work. Perhaps I misunderstood just exactly what and at what point I was to be mousing??

Thanks for any help on this. It has caused more than one person to become extremely annoyed with me when emails went to addresses they didn’t want me to continue using.

When you start typing in the To (or CC or BCC) box of a new e-mail, Outlook may display a list with one or more suggestions. If there is only one suggestion, it will already be selected. If there are more, you can select one with the up and down arrow keys (or select one with the mouse and hold down the mouse button). Pressing the Delete key should remove the item from the list of suggestions and from the nickname file.

          Here’s a free utility to edit/delete nicknames: NK2View – View/Delete/Edit Outlook .NK2 AutoComplete Information.

Thanks! I downloaded it, reativated the original file (by changing the name back), and tried it. It appears to have successfully deleted the offending name!

Wonder what they were thinking when they created a “storage unit” for that information that was so difficult to find and correct!

            Thank you very much.
