The implications of this are phenominal on a global scale..1.37bn users potentially affected but, therein are multiples of the same user with different email addresses, not that, that makes it any easier to swallow.

At first I thought of Facebook due to the scale. The following weeks will be interesting to discover who are affected via media sources.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

      “1.37 billion (with a “b”)”
It is a short-scale billion (so 10^9), just to be clear. 🙂 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_and_short_scales

I don’t know if I should find this funny given the ignorance of the spammers, or feel bad for the innocent victims who had their emails leaked.

It’s a naughty, naughty world we live in!!!   LT

They’re not spammers, they’re naughty little boys!                                                  (with apologies to The Life of Brian…..)

I feel sorry for all of the people who got their personal data exposed through this episode. But I’m ecstatic that these scumbags were exposed.

Of course, their personal information was already exposed on the spam networks, just not to the general public.

I wonder what we would find if Google were fully exposed?

All the more reason to use script blockers and ad blockers.

Unfortunately, the harvesting of email addresses and personal information is nowhere near restricted to ads or other things which can be blocked.

Social engineering is often closely integrated with the activities typical of the sites and services users are already making use of. Skype was mentioned — often not a case of an ad being clicked on. Then there’s email phishing, fake Chat accounts, Facebook Friending, etc.  It’s called social engineering for a reason.
