Don’t forget you can always click that “thanks” button at the bottom of a post.

      Anonymous users can’t. Can Guests?

If you don’t see that those fit want you are asking form, then click on the forums menu

To insert an image into a topic, all you have to do it have an image stored on your computer.

I don’t think Anonymous users can add attachments. And I don’t believe they can see attachments unless they are inserted into the Reply text either.
        Can Guests?

To insert an image into a topic, all you have to do it have an image stored on your computer.

It’s also possible to insert images into a post “without” having them stored on your PC.

#1. You can directly insert an image into your post by simply copying/pasting the “link” to the image like this.

        Notes:

The link must end in .bmp, .gif, .jpg, or .png and the extension must be in lowercase or the forum S/W won’t accept it as an “image” (it’ll show up as a link instead.)

If the image is too large (wider than 640px), once you’ve inserted into your reply, simple click on it, select edit (the pencil icon), and “shrink” it to a more acceptable display size.

#2. If the image “link” doesn’t meet the above extension requirements, you can use the bbcode img tag to insert it like this.

Note: it’s not possible to set the display size if you use the img tag (i.e. it will display in your post at full resolution.)

        • #2452854

Note: the image must be on a secure site (https), not on your computer.

            Oops, my bad.

            Thanks for catching that!

BTW, just tried it out (without actually “submitting” the post), and both of those methods will allow anonymous/guest posters to “insert” images.

What is the acceptable response to a post in which one is asked to defend a position (or statement) one has not taken (nor made), without being trashed for argumentative behavior/posting?

That is to say, a string of replies that has devolved into a discussion about two different coins under the apparent assumption, by one party, that it is about two sides of the same coin.  Is it argumentative to explain, “That is neither what I said nor what I meant”?

There comes a time when you have to say “we agree to disagree”.  Sometimes in tech we get to a point where we base our decisions on our personal experiences and we need to respect that in each other.

Note that the goal of the site is to ALWAYS have respectful discourse.  Alternative views can often showcase different ideas for technology solutions.  If the conversation starts to turn disrespectful or personal, the posts will be removed.

If responses are flat-out wrong — not opinions, facts — facts need to be presented. There really is no agree-to-disagree.

Stating the “earth is flat” invites rebuttal with fact and documentation.

Misquoting someone is misrepresentation and needs correction.

There are times and circumstances that each poster has to understand that everyone has their view of “facts” and thus what you are expressing is influenced by your personal experience.  I don’t mind this sort of conversations. What I will not tolerate is when it gets personal.

I grew up in a generation that valued a point/counterpoint view when people could rationally discuss both sides (Jane Curtain and Dan Akroyd notwithstanding) and I’ve always learned a lot lurking on a forum when two smart people explain their position.

At the same time we all have to understand that we live in a world where – even here – we sometimes have anon posters that will not be swayed and sometimes you have to be the adult in the room and walk away.  You can’t convince someone that will not be convinced no matter what you post.

Case in point, I will always have an irrational hatred/fear/distrust of Broadcom network cards used in HyperV servers and will immediately disable any and all settings regarding RSS/TOE/VMQ and any other settings that sound like it will speed up network traffic that when I’ve used it in the past gave me horrible experiences.  I’m sure folks in datacenters love these settings.  I irrationally hate them and will not be convinced otherwise.  But I’ll still love to read a factual, non personal discussion even though I will never enable those settings EVER on a server under my control.

When there is a difference between misconstruing a post (for whatever reason) into something that has neither been written nor implied, which can be resolved by directly quoting the post in question, in my view that is not being argumentative, it is a matter of quoting previous content for clarification.

Ultimately the determination if someone is – or is not – argumentative is my call. If I feel someone is no longer being reasonable I will remove the post, consider banning the poster by account and/or by IP.  Yes I realize that in this day and age of VPN this may be a bit of a game, I still want to cultivate a forum that can respectfully agree to disagree where appropriate without getting snippy, rude or personal.  When the posts do get snippy, rude and/or personal they WILL be removed.

Reply Tab keeps post AT or Near That post – Regular post space or Quote puts it at Discussion End, I think. In lengthy discussions Good info is sometimes missed when a helpful post goes back to an area people have visited and don’t return to.

How to have the post 2452809 in blue ie how to add link to a post number? (Even if it’s in another topic?)

How to reference another user ie PKCano’s post 2452842 referencing @b?

How to customize name of link in blue ie Susan’s post above #2452871?

Edit: just created this post, and upon submitting,  it is the first time I see it worked for me! I’m guessing adding the number sign in front of the typed post number triggers the blue?

The idea is that the word “Resolved” ultimately appears, as it used to until recently, flagging the title of a “resolved” thread in the “Recent posts: …” and similar lists.

      One question and one point:

As b has pointed out: Anonymous can’t thank for a comment to express support, agreement. To me, that’s one limitation of being ghostlike: can walk through walls but not touch.
In the same comment, b has also made a distinction between “Anonymous” and “Guest.” What is a “Guest”?

On the “argumentative” issue: “the earth is flat” vs. “sorry, but it is not so” is not argumentative, ONCE: It is about setting the record straight. Second time, though … it depends on the tone of the exchange. But I don’t think that ignoring nonsense altogether is a healthy thing to do. As Susan has said, some people cannot be persuaded. All one can do is make one’s case for logic and rationality, and then, if the other side can’t accept that, forget about it. That’s not leaving the field defeated, or agreeing to disagree, or accepting that someone that states that “black is white” has a point: that is getting away from a recalcitrant fool.

The set of instructions is very helpful – I wish I had had them at hand more than a year ago, when I joined — I learned then by trial and error by using the Testing Forum a lot.  Information about using the edit tabs is very helpful.  I had not known about the 2nd line until now!  [You will notice that I have practiced a couple of the edit tabs in the quote above!]

Post edit:  Using the ‘color’ icon doesn’t produce in the actual post the same thing that I see under the Visual Tab.  Here is what I see under the Visual tab.  The font is green and there is no html code. visual-tab-green-font

Here is what I see under the Text tab. The font is not green and there is html codetext-tab-green-font

All the formatting options work fine if you only use “one” of them for any particular section of text, but the forum S/W definitively does not like it if you “combine” certain formatting options (i.e. color, bold and underline seem to be the main culprits.)

              This text should be <span style=”color: #ff0000;”>bold red</span> and this should be <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>bold underlined</span>!

A workaround for this is to use the actual bbcode tags themselves

              [ color=red ] [ b ]some bold red text[ /b ][ /color ] and [ b ] [ u ]some bold underlined text[ /u ] [ /b ]

(note I added spaces after the [ and before the ] in the above tags so they wouldn’t trigger the bbcode conversion process.

This is what you get if you use the tags instead of the formatting tools.

This text will be bold red and this will be bold underline!

So it seems there’s a few bugs in how the forum S/W implements the formatting when chosen from the tools menu but it does understand and properly implement the actual bbcode tags themselves.

What distinguishes a “pretty link” from a regular link – when looking at it?  Could you add a screenshot to illustrate?

      • #2453441

Interesting question. I don’t know how to distinguish a pretty link either. I would think that pretty links, sometimes called Clean URLs, and shortened links are to be avoided in the forum.
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clean_URL

Addendum: Links are different from URLs, although they may be used interchangeably. “From a high (non-technical) level, a link refers to a clickable user interface that will take you to a specific location. The location is defined by a URL.”
        https://techstacker.com/whats-the-difference-between-links-and-urls/

So, it was not correct to refer to pretty links as Clean URLs.

          https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/june-updates-are-out/#post-2453445

          This is a ‘pretty’ link:

          June Windows Updates.

They both go to the same place.  The ‘pretty’ link will open it in a new tab.

The ‘pretty’ link will open it in a new window.

will always open it in a new window? or will open it in a new window, if the box is checked for ‘Open link in a new tab’?

Yes, check the box.  I misspoke saying “window” in my reply; I’ve edited it to say “tab”.

Good idea. I wonder if the moderator could move all of these posts about the ‘color’ icon in the edit bar over to the Testing Forum and we’ll continue discussing the problem there??

The headings were entered in Visual, showed correctly in Visual, but displayed as HTML on the webpage.

, I copied your post and pasted it into Text, not Visual. This is the result.

Results are not consistent with the edit box. What you see in the edit box is not what you see on the website. Heading 1 should be huge and decreasing in size to Heading 6.

There’s limited HTML access for those of us that don’t have “moderator” accounts (with  unrestricted HTML content posting). I’m not a moderator, nor do I have unrestricted content HTML posting. Shown below is my postbox.

If you use the Text toggle, there will be buttons across the top of the postbox. Most of these generate HTML and they produce the desired effect. For example, “b” produces bold text.

        test

        wpcode

These commands are not forgiving. You can botch your posts and possibly more if you’re not careful. Remember to close your tags.

Some of these buttons will match the Visual hieroglyphs (and the corresponding hieroglyph will work).

When I follow this link, which has a ‘-2‘ in it, the topic title does not have a ‘-2‘ in it. Why?

Is this another quirk – something like the ‘by’ quirk?

          Topic-title

wavy initially posted two topics with this same title. I suspect a moderator made some adjustments.

@wavy created two Topics with the same title. there were Replies only on one of them.
The duplicate topic (same title), which had no Replies, was trashed.

            • #2454011

That was an artifact of it seeming to be lost to the bit bucket perhaps. I o not specifically recall. My apologies for the dup.

      Step three: Create a post

Let users know that if they want to see replies to their newly created post, they should click the ‘Subscribe’ button in the header at the top of the topic page (which will say ‘Unsubscribe’ after subscribing). To-subscribe-to-a-topic

      • #2453815

That’s normally accomplished by checking Notify me of follow-up replies via email when posting, which obviates the need for a separate subscribe action.

Note I can put in a plug in that automatically subscribes you to a post when you post something.

That’s normally accomplished by checking Notify me of follow-up replies via email when posting,

I wish that this box were automatically checked all the time. I see here in this reply that the box is automatically checked, but there have been times when I have created a post (maybe starting a new topic?, maybe creating a new reply by clicking on ‘New Reply’ in the header?, maybe some other circumstance that I can’t bring to mind) when the box was not automatically checked and then I wondered why I was not getting any e-mail notifications of new posts/replies to the topic.
Now that you have reminded me of the checkbox, I see that I have had to use the ‘Subscribe’ button in the header after the fact, i.e., after having submitted a post without the box having been checked, in order to get e-mail notifications of subsequent posts to the topic to which I posted.

So, what are the difference(s) between checking the ‘Subscribe’ button in the topic-page header and checking the box for ‘notify me of follow-up replies via e-mail’?

            I don’t think there’s any difference.
