Has anyone experienced any difficulties using Adobe 5.0 with Word 2000SR1? Reason I ask is we’re shortly going to go to Office 2000. Currently we use Adobe Acrobat 4.0 and are considering an upgrade to 5.0. I had heard that there were issues with 5.0 & Word2000.

I haven’t seen any major problems, and I’ll tell you about the only problem that I came across (it may not have been 2000 or Acrobat 5’s fault). I reformatted my hard drive just before leaving on vacation (never a good idea!), and reinstalled everything-including Office 2000 and Acrobat 5.0.

While I was gone, the network guys needed to convert a Word document to PDF (please note that they have never done this before). They ran into problems-it wouldn’t convert the files and it gave some sort of error message. Apparently, they reinstalled Acrobat, and it worked fine. I’ve tried to make the problem happen again, but it hasn’t broken for me.

The only other thing that I’ve run into is this: Before I reformatted my hard drive, printing to the Acrobat Distiller wouldn’t work anymore-I could only use the PDF Writer. But I’ve had that same problem with Acrobat 4.0 and Office 2000 (on a different system).

Personally, I would recommend upgrading Acrobat-version 5.0 has a few features that may come in quite handy such as Save As… gives you the option to save as an .rtf (works only on documents originally converted from Word to PDF).

Let me know if you have any other questions,
      Becky

After loading Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 lost access to Word 2000 SR-1. My copy of Word 2000 is from Works Suite 2000. Had to reload Word 2000. Very difficult to load SR-1. Would ask for CD-Rom, go about 95% through the upgrade and then crash. After running Norton numerous times, Defragging disk at least 5 times, and trying the SR-1 update at least 50 times, finally got it to take today.

Also noted that as soon as I loaded Acrobat Reader 5.0, lost everything except Acrobat 5.0 Reader in the Uninstall portion of Control Panel.

Certainly hope that you don’t have the same degree of difficulty that I had.

I have an AMD K6/2-300 and use Windows 98SE. 192 Megs of Ram, 30Gig HD with 21G free.

Acrobat 5 has another excellent feature — it creates tagged PDFs which allow you to create PDFs readable on the Palm and other handhelds using Palm OS. This actually is very similar to the normal PDFs — even the style and structure of the Word file are recreated in the Palm PDF and Tables are converted into thumbnails when they are too large, and tapping these thumbnails allows you to view a graphic which can scroll along both axes.

Thank you Rajesh. That information is very valuable indeed! Did not realize it was ‘Palm-compatible’.

Whatever the wonderful features of Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0, I find it takes about three times as long to load as did version 4. More ‘progress’?
