I have a machine that takes ages (up to a minute) to display its Print or Format dialogue boxes.

When I wnat to print an open document and click the print icon, it will take up to a minute to show the hour glass, then up to a minute to display the printing page box, and then again a similar amount of time to actually whirr up the printer. The printer is connected via LPT1 to another PC, but is one that is used by others who do not have this problem.

The same time issues exist if I try to go to File | Print.

The delays also happen when I try to access the Format menu and the Tools menu. On the Tools menu and Options, the delay is longest when I try to access the Print tab.

This is a problem that has slowly been getting worse.

    Any ideas.

Do you have Norton Anti Virus? If so, see if the Office Plugin is enabled. This is known to cause all kinds of problems. You can turn it off safely as long as AutoProtect is on.
      – Start the Norton Anti Virus console.
      – Click Options.
      – Click Miscellaneous on the Other section
      – Clear the check box ‘Enable Office Plugin’.

Otherwise, see Phil Rabichow’s Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000).

No, I do not have Nortons on this machine.

But I guess that your suggestion leads me to think that I need to investigate what other processes and services are running on that machine that may be interfering with Word.

Is it possible there’s something wrong with the printer or printer driver — not the physical printer, since that seems to be working for other people, but the one installed on your machine? Could deleting/reinstalling the printer help?
