I am trying to using tables that span more than one page. Sometimes “heading rows repeat” works, other times it does not. I am aware of the Microsoft Knowledge Base article #198390 – about heading rows not repeated after a manual page break. But this is not the problem I am having – e.g. my tables do not have a manual page or section break in the middle of them.
I have observed the following in my tables that are not working –
    1. The table appears to split automatically when it overflows onto the next page (e.g. when i add enough additional lines to make it continue on the next page.
    2. Also sometimes I notice an extra paragraph mark to the right or the bottom of the table and I can’t get rid of it. Somehow this paragraph mark must be causing the table to split. If I could get rid of the extra paragraph marks this might fix the problem – but I still need to figure out where these extra paragraph marks are coming from.

Please help – this is very perplexing. Thank you.

Could you post a sample document that demonstrates the problem? Replace sensitive content with dummy text.

Yes. Actually I am teaching a word class, so the table is just an example and several students had this problem. Attached is one of the problem tables. You need to add enough rows to this table for it to “flow” onto a second page, then choose heading rows repeat and the top row is not repeated because the table somehow splits. Thank you for looking at this.

          Click anywhere in the table.
          Select Table | Table Properties…
Activate the Table tab (if necessary)
          Set Text wrapping to None.
          That’s it!

Hans – THANKS literally a million – I don’t think I ever would have found that. Just one more question – do you have any idea what might have turned text wrapping on in the first place? For my table, and most of the people in the class – there was no problem – but 4 had this problem; I am wondering what they might have done to turn on text wrapping. Thanks again so much.

I’m not sure – when you insert a table, Text wrapping is set to None by defaullt.

The paragraph mark appearing next to the table was the telltale sign that wrapping had been set to Around.

Hans – my only thought about maybe how table wrapping might be set on – is if the table was moved. Do you think this could do it. Actually i will try moving it several different ways and see if that sets text wrapping on.
              Thanks again.

There is a trick to get heading rows to repeat after a “page break” –

Don’t insert a page break in the first place!

Instead, in the first column of the row where you want a page break, go to Format, Paragraph, Line and Page Breaks, Page Break Before!
              Voila!

(This has worked at least since Word 2000.)
