• Word – Startup template location

I have my own opinion on this, but I’d like to hear what you all have to say.
What do you think is the best location for Startup templates – on the local
drive or on a shared network drive.

We have about 1600 users, in several locations. The Startup templates
contain macros and menus that are used to run other document templates (the
other document templates are stored on a shared network drive). The macros
and menus change quite frequently. We currently have a master copy on the
network that is copied locally at login.

Your comments would be much appreciated.

    Thanks…

I vote for local. Startup takes long enough as it is, I don’t need any extra latency introduced into the process by reaching out across the network.

Regarding the use of shared templates, I suspect Word was not designed to have 1000+ people connect to a single template. As a practical matter, you might never be able to update it.

        My view on shared templates-

I never experienced any problems with templates in the Workgroup location as well as the default location. However, if you have 2 templates with the same name (1 in each location), your pc will always default to the template on your pc even if the template in the workgroup location is newer. The answer is not to have identical templates in each location.
