I upgraded to a new Win2K computer and installed my Office 2K program. Unfortunately a virus got in (gone.scr). Norton quaranteed the virus and I removed it, however ther are now access problems with WORD. The following error message is generated when opening WORD – “winword.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being generated.”
The log indicates the error is a – “Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)”
All of the other office functions are working properly (Excel, Outlook, Access etc.) and I am able to access WINWORD and open Word Documents, however WORD is not cooperating.
This has got me stumped. Norton says there is no residual to Gone left in the machine and that everything is copacetic, however WORD is not cooperating. I assume that the virus corrupted something, however nothing shows up. I’m stymied! Help

Perhaps the virus corrupted something, but I would not rule out NAV corrupting something in “removing” the virus.

I NEVER let NAV correct/quarantine anything.

If NAV warns about a known virus, go to the SARC site and find out how to manually remove the virus AFTER you verify whether the warning is not a false positive.

If NAV gives a Bloodhound warning, do not assume that there really is a virus. Sometines the bloodhound catches a cold and has difficuly sniffing, resulting in false positives. In these cases, investgate whether there really is a virus.

Did you try to repair Office (Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Microsoft Office… | Change | Repair Office) ?

Yes I have gone to Symantic and I have followed their instructions for removing the virus.
Yes, I have used the repair programs function of Windows and the Office Disk.
No, it doesn’t work, I get the same message. There is still something in the system keeping it from opening, probably connected with the virus, but I have been unable to find it.
Thanks for the suggestions and I’ll take any more that you have!

Hi this may be a long shot – or you may have already tried it, but when my hubby ran into problems with Word 2K not wanting to open, we renamed Normal.dot and let Word generate a new one at next open. This worked for him…hope it does the trick for you. (his problem was not virus related, but just as much of a mystery situation – corruption of Normal.dot really messes up Word.)
