Word reconsidder setting in Registry; How? (W2000; 9.0.4402 SR-1, Windows 2000)

Hi,

I have just started using Windows 2000 and the Service Pack 2 of Word.

I experience that I cannot change the settings in File locations.

In the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftOffice9.0WordOptions the key STARTUP-PATH is set to another Folder than at startup, but Word do not use this setup when started the next time.

the same for the other settings in File locations.

Can anybody tell me why and how to override these settings in the registry.

The key you mention is one that I have not yet come across. On the various Win2K Word 2000 configurations I have worked with, the key for the Word Start-Up folder seems to be governed by HCUKSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0CommonGeneralStartup. I suspect that the rest of the path is picked up from other environment variables (e.g. %USERPROFILE%). If you are trying to achieve something like the alternate startup path in Excel, you may be attempting something that is not readily doable.

The odd thing is that Word does not obey the settings in File locations. How come!

Also I cannot change the settings in File locations.

There must be one place, may be in the Registry, where this setting is located.

This phenomenon occur when logging on to a network and the log on profile for me is started during log in.

This is probably right on the money.

You are right, it is a policy that is run when logging on to the network and it is generated a new folder under CURRENT USER/Software which is called Policy and have the key settings which Word is obeying.

I have been looking into “Chapter 7” and may find some place where I can figure out where to look. So far it is many places to look and it is probably a matter of being intelligent in searching with the correct words.

Anyway I will try to get hold of the documentation that can tell about the registry “secrets” and thus where in the registry the key for such protection/control are set.
