I’ve noticed this in Word 2000 and the VB Editor from time to time, but haven’t figured out the exact pattern. Many times I am copying something from a Lounge post, but I certainly haven’t done any thorough testing. Point being: I don’t think this is a new problems in XP.

I have been frustrated several times when I select some text in another program and copy, then launch Word so that I can paste it in. However, when Word launches, the clipboard is always emptied. No other program does this (Access, Excel, PowerPoint).

Is this meant to be a “feature”? Is there a way to get around this?

Could this be related to any add-ins you are running?

There was a post today that appears to be a similar problem.

I don’t have an answer, but I’ve had the same thing occur with Excel 2000–every time. However, with Word 2000, it pastes slowly, whether or not Word is already running. In fact, if my Internet connection is closed, trying to paste will launch the dialup dialog box & connect to the Internet. Excel puts a bitmap (a small folder with a checkmark) onto the clipboard (however, it doesn’t paste). It may be because I have ASAP utilities that I use with Excel. I’m wondering if there’s some setting in Windows that affects this behavior.

I have NOT had this problem, I use “Print Scrn” and then start Word and then do the Pasting with no problem.
We do this at our SeniorNet Class room with 16 machines and it works on all of them.

          Hi Dave:
But does it happen when you select, copy, & paste text from IE to Word? I can’t “avoid” the problem with text.

          • #649469

Yes it does, but ZoneAlarm needs permission to access the web because in gets pasted as HTML form by default. This will make the links hot. I think this has someting to do with “Smart links”.

If you have a firewall and have told it to remeber that Word was NOT to have access, this may be blocking the paste.

Well, I’ll be d____. I do have Zone Alarm, but it’s set to automatically allow Word to access the internet. I just discovered that if I shut down Zone Alarm, I can paste text from IE fairly quickly. If Zone Alarm is running, it hesitates, noticably, before pasting. I have a very old version of Zone Alarm (2.1.44). Do you think any of the later versions would allow pasting faster? This version still works well by using stealth mode & is easy to operate. I’ve heard that later versions are clunky. I really don’t use all the logging features, etc.
Thank you very much!! What a discovery!

No, this is still a problem just using PowerPoint, copying, then opening Word. on my own computer.

It also occurs with IE (but not exclusively.).

Although I am behind a firewall, I don’t have Zone Alarm or anything else like that. And that still should not affect two programs on my own computer.

I have just opened a PowerPoint file and copied and pasted several items and ways with out a problem.

Being behind a Firewall, may be the problem if the file you are copying from is on the other side of it.

I can NOT reproduce your problems. I have tried at least 4 different machines.

While I am behind a firewall, just copying from a presentation on my own computer then opening Word to paste still empties the clipboard. Note, it is not that I can’t copy and paste if Word is already open; it only is when I copy when Word has not been launched. Then when Word launches it empties the clipboard.

Have you looked at the suggestion by Andrew in post 219760? If there’s a macro in normal.dot or an add-in that’s causing this, you need to investigate. See post 197827 for an approach to look at normal.dot and add-ins.

            • #650430

I had read that. I only had two macros, deleted them and still didn’t work.

No add-ins – except WOPR Commander – nah, that wouldn’t do it. smile

Like Jefferson, I sometimes can’t paste into Word2000 even when it’s running already, and never found a pattern. Might have to do with conflicts between the Windows clipboard and Office clipboard.

In the past, if Word was installed as a part of the Works suite, the Works add-in deleted the clipboard when you started Word.
Don’t know if it still happens with Word2002.

              cheers Klaus
