    Hi all,

I just tried making changes to my Heading 1 style by removing numbering from it and by making it centered. I had “automatically update” selected in the Modify Style dialogue box. I saved my changes, closed it and opened it up again. The changes were gone.

Then I went through these steps again, only I unchecked “automatically update” in the Modify Style dialogue box. Saved it, closed it, opened it. Changes gone. Is there a phantom in the machine?

Anyone know why it won’t save my changes? SAme is true every time I try to make some basic changes to the TOC. When I change the style and I open the document again, the TOC looks the same as before the changes were made!

    Help,

    JMT

Have you cleared the check box in Tools > Templates and Add-Ins… > Automatically update document styles

This one causes the styles in the template to over-write the styles in the document every time you open the document.

        Hi Stuart,

Isn’t that the same as clearing “automatically update” in the Modify Style dialogue box? I guess not, since it worked.

Also, will clearning the “Automatically update document styles” box affect only this one document or all of them?

        Thanks,

        JMT

‘Automatically update document styles’ in the Tools | Te,plates and Add-Ins dialog means that each time you open the document, the styles from the template your document is based on will be copied into the document, overwriting any changes you made to the styles in the document itself.
This is a per-document setting, so turning it on or off in one document doesn’t affect other documents.

‘Automatically update’ in the Modify Style dialog means that if you modify the formatting of some text, the changes will automatically be applied to the style of the text, causing all other text with that style to be modified too. Normally, this affects only the document, but see below.

‘Add to template’ in the Modify Style dialog means that the style and its modifications will be added to the template as well as to the document. This is more or less the converse of ‘Automatically update document styles’ but it applies to only one style at a time.
