Other than getting a copy of dreamweaver or buying FP XP is there any manual way – eg a crib sheet – of establishing what is not necessary and removing the extra bits word saves if you create a word HTML doc?

If you want to remove the extraneous code from the html produced by word you could try the HTML filter that Microsoft provide.
