Running word 2k on win xp. I have a couple documents, originally saved in rtf that suddenly you can’t read. They are showing all the formatting or something and are useless the way they are. Any suggestions.

To do the following, make sure that Confirm Conversion at Open is checked under Tools|Options…|General tab.

What file format does Word think the document is when you open it? If it thinks its RTF, then the problem probably is not in the file. Might want to “repair” Office using the installer, Start button|Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs… If Word doesn’t recognize the documents as RTF, they may have become corrupted.

Another thing to check is: if you are opening the documents using the File >Open dialog, that you do not have ‘Files of type:’ set to ‘Recover text from any file’.

Thank you very much. That was the problem. I never would have thought to go that route.OOps. Worked once. Now it’s back the same way, but the settings stayed.

Yup, almost everybody forgets that this option “sticks”…including me!
