I use Works Word on Vista and on occasion have sent, as an attachment, various Works Word documents by email only to be told by the receiver that they cannot open my doc. I realise that this is a ‘compatibility’ problem between Works Word and Word and wonder what is the best conversion format to use on my doc before I send it as an attachment on an email.
Obviously I can insert my doc as part of the body of the email but only if it is basic text so this approach is not always the best.
I detail below the conversions that I can make and would like advise as to which is the best to use in such situations.

Added note … On further checking it seems that I can ‘Save As’ the Works Word doc in the format Word 97-2003. I guess that this covers most situations?

Replies

Your screenshot shows compatibility options for the application. They don’t apply to documents that you create. I’d try specifying Word 97-2003 format in the Save As dialog.

If those to whom you send documents can’t open them you should encourage them to download and install the Download details: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.

As more and more people use Office 2007 and Office 2010 test versions the newer format documents are going to become more common. It will be easier for those with older versions of Office or Works to just install the compatibility pack.

Joe. You mention above older versions of ‘Works’ can use this compatibility pack. I had a read but cannot see reference to users of Works being able to use this compatibility pack? Perhaps I have missed something.

If they have a version of Word installed as part of Works then they need the compatibility pack.
