I am using OL2000 in Internet Only Mode. Sometimes when I attach word documents to an e-mail the recipient gets the attachment as a “Win Dat” file, not the Word document.

    Any Ideas?

A search in the Outllok forum for “dat attachment” throws up several previous threads including Post 87507.

Thanks for the hint. Here’s the bizarre thing – I send a message to a non-outlook account (I have a yahoo mail address) and the attachment, when downloaded consists of two files one called “file.txt” and one called “winmail.dat”.
If I then forward the whole message back to my outlook account the word document is back and readable!

it’s not bizarre at all. winmail.dat = RTf formatted message, which only outlook can read. Only use plain text or HTMl formatting and all will be well.
