I use Word 2000 running under Windows 2000 Professional. When I go to Tools / Envelopes and Labels and click on the little address book icon to pick a different return address I get the following error message:

    Logon failed.
You must log on to Microsoft Exchange to access your address book.
    Error code: “Unspecified Error.”

I have both Outlook and Outlook Express on my machine, but I have no connection to Exchange. I am not on a network.

How can I fix this problem so I can access one or the other of my address books? (It does not matter to me which one.)

Does it matter whether Outlook is running when you try to access the address book? If Outlook Express is running? Do you use profiles in Outlook?

I don’t know how it happened, but the problem has magically fixed itself. Based on your suggestion I started Outlook Express, then Word and tried it. When I clicked the button, some addresses from Outlook Express showed up! Then I closed Outlook Express and tried it again. It still worked. Then I disconnected from the internet, kept Outlook Express closed and tried it again. It still worked. So I’m happy but puzzled.

The contact list entry is “Address Book.” The only other option is “Microsoft Outlook.” There is no entry for Outlook Express.

What address book is this thing pointing to? And how do I put addresses into it?

It’s all moot now, since the problem seems to have magically fixed itself.
