• Word 2007 Save As 6.0/95

I used to be able to SaveAs Word 6.0/95 in Word 2007. I need to be able to do this to allow placing in PageMaker without losing styles/formats.

I have just reinstalled Office 2007 together with all upgrades on a new computer, and find that I no longer have the option to save in this format.

Searching found some articles on Group Policies, but they seem incredibily complex. Is there a relatively simple solution to this? Am I missing something?

After posting this, I had a Sudden Thought While In Bath (STWIB). In my searching, I had run across WD97: Word 6.0/95 Not in “Save As Type” in Save As Dialog Box, but since this referred to Word 97, I ignored it. I did check to see if the file Wrd6ex32.cnv was where it said, but it wan’t on any of my computers.

It then struck me that my previous installation had been on top of Office 2000. I wondered if this file was part of that version. On checking, I found that it was indeed in the folder referred to in my ME Virtual Machine still running Office 2000 (I use the VM primarily for this purpose). So I copied this file from the VM to the host, followed the rest of the instructions of Method 1 in the KB article, and lo and behold! I am able to save as Word 6.0/95!

Note: the Office 2007 CD does not seem to include this file. However, Googling did show up at least one apparent source.

        Hi Chris !

Following the Microsoft links, you can download the files . Microsoft mentions the file in the Office converter Pack – Office 2003 Resource Kit. The required download file Oconvpck.exe can be found HERE under the heading Office Converter Pack.

Thanks for the link. But sadly that does not seem to include the one converter which is required for saving in Word 6.0/95 native format (.doc). In regard to Word 6.0/95 files, the converter included in this tool only seems to include the ‘Microsoft Word 6 RTF export converter (Wrd6Er32.CNV)’, and doesn’t include the Wrd6ex32.cnv file needed to native format.

This conclusion is based on the list in the Office converter Pack – Office 2003 Resource Kit details (which does not list native format file) and by looking at the content of Oconvpck.exe, which again does not include Wrd6ex32.cnv. Since I’ve already managed to install this converter by other means, I can’t easily provide evidence base that this tool does not in fact provide it.

Interestingly, the converter does not appear at the registry location noted in the article, but at:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftOffice12.0WordText ConvertersExport

Most of the others do appear at the Shared Tools location.

            Hi folks,

My Word 2007 installation gives me the Save As 6.0/95 option (and even the much older Word 3-5 for DOS formats!), though I’ve only installed the (original) Office 2000 converter pack – and that was before installing Office 2007. I do seem to recall that MS replaced the original Office 2000 converter pack some years ago, deleting a number of file formats that were no longer considered safe due to the macro security risks they represented.

            Cheers,
