Word 2007 Mail Merge – using Thunderbird as email client

The arrangement that by default Word 2007 uses Outlook for a Mail Merge by email is no more than to be expected!

In Thunderbird I can mass mail with an add-on Mail Merge 2.0. But can I have Thunderbird replace Outlook as the default email client in Word? If so how?
