In Word 2007, I often insert long footnotes in my documents that flow over to the next page.
How can I format the footnotes so that I get an automatic message saying (“footnote continued”, or “footnote # continued”, or even “continued”) above the continued footnote?

How can I format the footnotes so that I get an automatic message saying (“footnote continued”, or “footnote # continued”, or even “continued”) above the continued footnote?

In your document change the view to Draft view (this being Word 2007), then go to the References tab on the ribbon.

You may then see something like my screen shot below (though that’s the Word 2003 version, it’s the same idea). If you don’t see an area like that you’ll need to click View Notes.

See the drop down list? One of the things you can select there is Footnote Continuation notice, and there you can type any wording you would like Word to insert where footnotes spill on to another page. Another drop down is Footnote Continuation separator, and with that you can control whether there is a line between the continued footnotes and the main text.
