I’ve been staring at the Task Pane for almost a year now, and just realized that it can float (or be re-docked elsewhere). Its position appears to be “sticky”, as would be expected.
Just in case anyone else was as inobservant as me on that …

The task pane behaves to some extent as a toolbar – it is in fact listed in the Customize window, and is part of the CommandBars collection. The following instructions work:
CommandBars(“Task Pane”).Position = msoBarRight
CommandBars(“Task Pane”).Position = msoBarLeft
CommandBars(“Task Pane”).Position = msoBarFloating
You can’t use msoBarTop or msoBarBottom – docking to the top or bottom edge of the window has been disabled for understandable reasons.
I knew it was part of the CommandBars collection, but I just never put it together. Sigh.
I can actually dock it on the top or bottom of the window, but that may be because I’m on a Tablet PC — docking on the right takes up too much space in portrait layout, so Word opens the Task Pane docked at the bottom from that mode.
